Hi all

Trying to get Mac OS X 10.5 on my Acer Travelmate 8210 using the retail DVD approach. I use the Boot 132 boot loader and then slap in my Retail Mac OS X 10.5 disc.

I run it with cpus=1, then it runs the debugger and hits a panic and stops loading the disc.

Any help would be appreciated, my computer specs are as follows:

CPU- Intel Core2 duo T7200 (2.0 ghz, 667 MHz FSB)

Chipset- Intel Mobile 945pm express

Graphics- ATI mobility radeon x1600

I also tried with iATKOS v4i and got the same error.

I just realize that you use retail 10.5 DVD. I use 10.5.6 but I don't think it will make much different.

Can you list each kexts that you put in Boot-132 CD? This is what I have/use:-

AppleACPIBatteryManager.kext
AppleACPIPlatform.kext (vanilla kext from 10.5.6 - for ApplePS2Controller.kext dependency)
AppleACPIPS2Nub.kext (located inside AppleACPIPlatform.kext plugins folder)
AppleDecrypt.kext
ApplePS2Controller.kext (need it to get keyboard & trackpad working)
IntelCPUPMDisabler.kext (to prevent AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext from loading that can cause panic)
IO80211Family.kext (vanilla kext from 10.5.6 - I need to put it in Boot-132 because I use broadcom wireless 4315 which I need to add manually in Info.plist)
IONetworkingFamily.kext (vanilla kext from 10.5.6 - for IO80211Family.kext dependency)
SMBIOSResolver.kext

You can start with these kexts first:-

AppleACPIPlatform.kext (vanilla kext from 10.5 - for ApplePS2Controller.kext dependency)
AppleACPIPS2Nub.kext (located inside AppleACPIPlatform.kext plugins folder)
AppleDecrypt.kext
ApplePS2Controller.kext (need it to get keyboard & trackpad working)
IntelCPUPMDisabler.kext (to prevent AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext from loading that can cause panic)
SMBIOSResolver.kext

You can extract the vanilla kext from your retail DVD. If you have problem gathering the kexts please let me know. Maybe I can try to obtain it for you....somewhere. :)

umm... so i'm having trouble adding kexts. I can't mount my intrid.img or burn it. every software i try to use says that it isn't an image. i've downloaded the file from a few different sources but its always the same error. I would use terminal, except i only have a PC available to me right now. do you know know any ways around this?

my windows OS is on NTFS. can't deal with .img's with this file format. i'll get around that

You can mount .img file in linux if you don't have working OS X. Just use linux live-cd for example Fedora. To mount .img file in Fedora, you just need to double-click the file.

I have prepared basic kexts that you need to put in initrd.img. Keep in mind the kexts is based on 10.5.6:-

Or you can download it in initrd.img format:-

I was able to edit the img file on my friend's mac. snam11 pmed me a while ago saying to remove AppleIntel8254XEthernet.kext from the IONetworkingFamily.kext on install and replace it afterwards. I'll try this and repost.

The files you linked to don't have anything there, but I found all of the kexts you listed earlier. Thanks

I'm now using 10.5.6 dvd like you, so hopefully no problems :)

Also, the thing I said about NTFS wasn't right, it didn't work on a windows with FAT32 either.

Sorry about the link PWOINK. I has revised the content of basic kexts & I forgot to update the link. I removed AppleACPIPlatform.kext because we don't need it. I'm afraid if we include it, there is a chance that Mac OS X will not boot after major update (for example 10.5.6 to 10.5.7). Our computer can use the original AppleACPIPlatform.kext inside /System/Library/Extensions folder.

This is the revised basic kexts:-

pwoink: you need to use latest chunnan (aka eureka) kext.

it will fix pcmcia errors so you can use pcmcia slot, and also will fix lan problems (also kp of course).

put into 132 and have fun! :)

p.s. i'm still playng with retail boot with no success... dunno what i miss.

i'll start a topic soon so all the 821x owners can join and solve all the issues

Hi snam11,

PCMCIA driver/fix include hacked IOPCIFamily.kext. I was not able to put IOPCIFamily.kext in Boot-132 because it will only cause kernel panic. If I put in /S/L/E it will not caused kernel panic. I don't know why, maybe this only happen to some computer chipset/hardware (I have tested on two different laptops). I'm just wondering, were you able to put it in Boot-132 & survived?

kizwan, afaik latest chunnan kext doesn't replace any io kext,it just add a NEW IOPCMCIAfamily kext. so have a try.

check also my new topic so you can maybe solve your issues:

about your question: yes, i'm able to put into 132 boot disk, but than i have other issues booting retail disk, so i cannot tell if is 100% working, but FOR SURE it fix lan kp.

Yes I know. IOPCIFamily.kext included in IOPCMCIAFamily.kext caused kernel panic if I put it in Boot-132. But it is working if I put it in /S/L/E.

It is OK though. It has been a while when I found the problem. Maybe it has been solved with the latest chameleon bootloader. I can't reproduced the error or test it with the new chameleon right now. :) I use chameleon 2 rc1 at the moment (EFI-Boot-132 bootloader).

  • 2 weeks later...

I've got an Acer Travelmate 8202, which I would imagine would work in the same way, but I'm just not having much luck.

I've got access to a Snow Leopard Retail DVD, but for a Leopard install I only have a Leopard restore disk (10.5.2) which came with my MacBook Pro.

I know everyone says to use a retail disk for all this, but I thought, considering the MacBook Pro 3,1 is almost identical to our laptops, surely all the relevant stuff is on there already?

Would I be able to use the same kexts you guys are using to finally even get either disk to boot?

The 8202 has a 1.66Ghz Core Duo CPU, and n ATI x1600 256Mb gfx card

Your help would be much appreciated :)
