totentanz
Which one should I get? 9800 GTX+ 512mb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130339 GTX 285 2gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130486 I'm planning to do a fresh Retail 10.5.7 + Chameleon v2.0 RC1 install like the one detailed here. I'm building a machine that is strictly for photo/video editing. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/169002-9800-gtx-or-gtx-285/ Share on other sites
sheeplover
ATM it absolutely doesn't matter which one you take if you're not going to take advantage of the cards 3d capabillities. Looking some months forward top Snow Leopard and OpenCL gives a different view on things: with an OS that uses the graphics card's GPU for parallel task processing you are most likely to get faster renderings with the GTX285. Like Quicktime does with the 9400M for now, Quicktime X should provide faster results using the GPU for transcoding etc. of your video footage. -- sheep Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/169002-9800-gtx-or-gtx-285/#findComment-1170896 Share on other sites

So what's the best card to get right now for video and photo editing, compatibility-wise? The 9800GTX or the Radeon 4870? Synaesthesia
Both work. The 4870 is faster. Try to get the 4870 1gig. You'll really only notice the difference in games. For Video & Photo editing, I recommend something cheaper, an ATI 2600XT or 3870. The most important thing is a fast processor and lots of RAM Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/169002-9800-gtx-or-gtx-285/#findComment-1171989 Share on other sites

Or will the 8800GT that I already have be sufficient? Price isn't really a concern. I'm just looking for the best card right now for video and photo editing. But it sounds like the pricey cards won't add any performance? BTW, I do run dual monitors, one 30" and another 24" - not sure if that matters... Which will run more smoothly in OSX? I've read that ATI drivers for OSX are not the best. MaaseyRacer
The 8800GT that you have should be just fine. While that is not the newest of cards, it is still a great card for graphic work. Right now I am using the 9800GTX+, I purchased it when my X1900 died and I wanted to get the best bang for my buck.
