Hey all,

I have tried a Vanilla install with a retail disk (10.5.6.) on a GA-EP45-UD3R V1.1 using GRUB DFE.

When I use my 320GB SATA Western Digital HDD with an existing 20GB Windows installed partition and a 2nd partition that is mostly blank.

That hard drive shows up just fine.

When I try to use a blank 40GB SATA Western Digital HDD, it doesn't even show up in the install process.

Things I have tried:

- make 2 20 GB NTFS partitions, install XP on one partition. Nothing shows up.

- create one giant partition "id=af" using diskpart in XP. Nothing shows up.

- Played with master/slave settings on HDD. Nothing shows up.

- Used Gparted Live disc to format in HFS+. Nothing shows up.

I've tried everything I could find nothing works.

Any help you guys can provide is greatly appreciated.

I had a similar problem on my older GA board with SATA drives not showing. It was because I was running overclocked! When I returned to stock CPU speed my SATA drives showed up in Disk Util. Just a thought.

Other things you could check:

  • Try using different SATA ports.
  • Try different IDE/SATA settings in the BIOS
  • Do you have the latest BIOS installed?

Hope these suggestions help.

Thank you for the replies, however nothing seems to work.

The following are the bios settings I have implemented:

BIOS SETTINGS:

Standard CMOS Features:

1. Change the Date and Time to the correct values

2. Set "Drive A" to "None"

3. Set "Floppy 3 Mode Support" to "Disabled'

4. Set "Halt On" to "All, But Keyboard"

Advanced BIOS Features:

1. Set "First Boot Device" to "CDROM"

2. Set "Second Boot Device" to "Hard Disk"

3. Set "Third Boot Device" to "Disabled"

4. Set "HDD S.M.A.R.T. Capability" to "Enabled"

5. Set "Limit CPUID Max. to 3" to "Disabled"

9. Set "CPU EIST Function" to "Enabled"

10. Set "Virtualization Technology" to "Enabled"

11. Set "Full Screen LOGO Show" to "Disabled"

12. Set "Init Display First" to "PEG"

Integrated Peripherals:

1. Set "SATA AHCI Mode" to "AHCI"

2. Set "SATA Port0-1 Native Mode" to "Enabled"

3. Set "USB Controller" to "Enabled"

4. Set "USB 2.0 Controller" to "Enabled"

5. Set "USB Keyboard Support" to "Enabled"

6. Set "USB Mouse Support" to "Enabled"

So, I have tried a bunch of stuff and nothing is working.

I am thinking that it might be because of the size of the hard drive.

Is 40GB too small or something?

Okay, I have similar problems even though I'm not using a Retail Install.

My SATA Hard Drive (60 gigs - Hitachi - In a Laptop - See Specs Below) is not recognized During Install/Disk Utility.

I am trying to dual boot XP and OSx86 using Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD (Haven't tried other distros, but reading through forums, I'm not sure if other distros will work as well)

Currently Three Partition, 1st Recovery (FAT32), 2nd WinXP (NTFS - 25 GB) and 3rd (26 GB)

I was hoping to install OSX on the 3rd Partition and make a dual boot through chain0.

I tried unallocating the partition, using id=af method through diskpart, formatting it to FAT32, nothing works for the installer to recognize the HDD.

Sadly, my phoenix BIOS doesn't support changing to AHCI mode.

Many have had this problem, but I can't find a resolution to this issue anywhere.

if wildchild's 320GB SATA Western Digital HDD is recognized, does this mean that there are certain SATA drives that are recognized and some are not?

If BIOS doesn't support changing to AHCI mode, what can be done? Is there a patch for the ISO with a good SATA driver?

let us know what can be done.
