Chrono86
Hey guys~ As widely known many AC97 audio chips only play out of the left channel unless you do some kext modifications. I have an nforce4 one, and it has always worked fine. Up until I installed mac 10.4.5 it was working perfectly ok under windows xp. After installing mac os I got audio only out of the left channel. Rebooting into windows xp I noticed the same problem was now happening there too. I've reflashed my BIOS and updated the onboard sound drivers but nothing worked. I think the onboard sound has permanetly broke. I tried the wiki on audio but I couldn't find the **other ids** string under the nvidia section...it wasn't there. Anyways this is just a warning to other users. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/16656-mac-broke-my-onboard-sound/ Share on other sites
Korrupted
Did you try using older sound kexts, ones that worked I mean? Maybe that will fix it. Just a guess though. I never really had any sound issues. Chrono86
This is the first time I've tried Mac OS on my system so I don't know if older kexts would work or how to obtain them if I wanted to try. I just find it really odd how it broke it under windows as well. Most people who discuss the AC97 audio problems seem to have VIA chipsets...nobody has really talked about the onboard audio on nforce4 boards. Korrupted
There used to be a torrent out there on your favorite torrent sites that had the 10.4.3 kexts all bundled in a zip file, but I dunno if it is still seeded anymore. Edit: If you find it, do *not* post it here, asking if you found the right one. PM me instead. <_> Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/16656-mac-broke-my-onboard-sound/#findComment-107311 Share on other sites
Chrono86
Ok, now how do I install the older kext? Merely replacing it in the extensions folder and rebooting causes mac to say it was improperly installed when it boots up. Chrono86
OK nevermind I was able to install it the right way. Unfortunatly I'm still getting left channel only. I seriously think the onboard sound just broke... Fix the windows sound and then try to get stereo under osx. Rgds. darcagn
This has happened to me before with Linux drivers. I have always been able to fix it by raising the volume to the maximum level. It makes a pop and starts playing out of both channels. I know, that sounds weird. But it worked for me (multiple times), just try it.
