I downloaded "Mac.OS.X.Tiger.10.4.6.X86-HOTiSO" form the torrent. The download is a folder with that name, 92 files, no .iso or .dmg files on it. How do I burn a bootable dvd?? Thnx.

Does the files from the folder you've downloaded have the same name and an extension like .r01, .r02....., or just .001, .002, etc?

If that is the case, you're dealing with an archive. Double-click one of them and extract the iso.

I'm getting 10.4.6 now and I can tell it's a 4.35GB .iso file.

Your one seems to be rar'ed so unrar it to a folder anywhere and then burn all in the folder (not including the folder) onto a blank DVD.

I don't think you have much to worry about so just go and burn it. Otherwise you could go and download "JaS 10.4.6 Install dvd". But your one and this might be the same thing. Just make sure before you boot from the DVD you know how to install everything the way you want it.

I very much doubt burning a folder full of files to a blank DVD is going to work. A Mac OS X boot disc has its own filesystem, and requires permissions and ownership information to be correct before booting.

I would advise that you get a proper ISO file and burn that.

The idea here is not to burn the folder but the content of the folder. Sure getting an iso file will help things out but remember you can unrar an iso file and put it into a folder and burn that as data rather than using the iso file to burn in one go. So it makes no difference.

An iso file is simply rar'ed or ziped file that makes burning simpler.

thats not true. an ISO file is an *image* of the original disc - think a per-bit copy of the entire disc contents. this is why the image size is typically the same as the data capacity of a DVD - 4.7Gb.

its certainly possible to create a zip file of all the files which were on the DVD, but this will not result in a bootable DVD. for one thing, the el-torito hidden boot disk image will not be present on the burned coaster, sorry, DVD. nor will the filesystem attributes (eg all files owned by root:wheel, file permissions etc) - these will all be lost and set to whatever windows (or whatever OS you do this in) defaults them to.

you may want to do some reading on this:

if you still dont beleive me, grab a Windows XP disc, copy all the files to your HDD, then insert a blank CD and burn the files to it. now try to boot that disc.

did it work?

well, at least you have something to rest hot drinks on...
