aust68
Ok, my friend, installed OS X onto a 4th partition of his only drive with the myzar image, it installed perfectly, but then I gave him the Acronis OS Selector, and he accidentally formatted his OS X partition to FAT32 before installing the OS Selector, which he installed to that same partition. He rebooted, and of course, the OS Selector only gave him the choice of going into Windows, but he didn't know why at the moment, so he went to go into Windows, and it wouldn't boot at all. Then he booted his Mac DVD and reinstalled OS X to a another partition. It installed, but now the FAT32 partition with the OS Selector on it is unallocated. The windows partition is set to active, but the only thing that will boot is the OS X DVD. Is it possible to restore the Windows MBR from OS X? And does Acronis leave a backup of it that you can restore? Or is there another method to fix this without having to reinstall Windows? Any help is appreciated. thrunner
Sometimes OSX will wipe your WinXP partition. In that case, fixing MBR won't help much towards booting WinXP. Otherwise, Acronis has the boot recovery diskette/CD available for download. You can try reinstalling OS selector from those boot media and see if the OS selector can find the various OSes. http://wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=55317 Sometimes you need to fix Master Boot Record on your hard drive. We have two special utilities for this purpose. 1. Using floppy drive. Please insert a diskette into the floppy drive and run the file available by the link below: http://www.acronis.com/files/support...towrite_en.exe Once the floppy is written, boot the computer from it and confirm that you want to fix the master boot record. You do NOT need to copy this file to diskette. Just launch it from hard disk (or any media) with the diskette inserted. 2. Using CD. Please use the following ISO image to create a special CD: http://www.acronis.com/files/support...towrite_en.iso You can read how to record a CD with an ISO image at the following links: http://trb.org/publications/burning_iso.html (Nero Burning ROM and Roxio Easy CD Creator) http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm (other applications) Once the CD is written, boot the computer from it and confirm that you want to fix the master boot record. aust68
Thanks for that, I'll burn it and give it to him tomorrow, see how it goes. Also, I'm pretty sure the Windows drive wasn't wiped, he said he could still access it and the files from OS X, so it should be fine. Thanks again. aust68
Ok, he tried the Acronis MBR restore disk, but now he gets and Invalid Operating System error, so I'm guessing that windows is ruined now, he's going to reinstall it anyways.
