It's time to replace my 2-yo MBP. I know nothing about PC laptops, even which brands are good/bad. What might be considered a good replacement for a MBP? I wouldn't mind a higher res screen than the 15" MBP provides! That would be sweet.

I have looked at the Dell XPS 1530, but DELL??? Not sure I can parse that ;)

How much do you wanna spend? I just built a MBP replacement for a friend that chose the New Dell Latitude E5500/E6500. They're 15.4's that can be customized with a 1920x1200 screen. They support up to 8gigs of ram come standard with 6-9cell batterys and core 2 duo's up to 2.9GHz. Nvidia quadro graphics, which works very well with nvkush, you can do the 1505 wireless card for built in wireless N out the box working. They have a beautiful black brushed metal finish and a working webcam right out the box...Very nice machine! Runs about ~800

Well, I would spend more than that. I would like something as nice as the MBP, which I know I won't, but as close to it. Thin and light but powerful.

Did you have any problems with the E5500/E6500? Does it have the Touchpad and Sleep problems? I'm interested in a 15.4" with 1920x1200. Unfortunately the XPS m1350 is not available with the 1920x1200 screens any more on the US Dell site, so I'm considering the E6500 now if there are not too many things not working with it.

Thanks.

beware of dell if you use customer service dell knows barely {censored}. other than that dells are great. just dont believe them right away when they say somethings broken. I made tech support feel like idiots the other day.

HP's are good but vista rating system tends to rate them low for some reason, but i reccomend it over alot of things. Toshiba is good. but if you want a bad ass laptop look into the core 2 extreme laptops. i think alienware sales them, you are looking at like 4 grand so your better off with with a MBPro. whatever you feel. If you are using windows ide go with alien or toshiba, if you are hackintoshing it im not the guy to ask.

also alienware has great tech support

Everything works, only problem is that the audio drivers interfere with shut down sometimes. Its pretty much the same as my D820

Also the Gateway FX laptops are great on the price, have 9800m's and support C2Extremes as well. I love the alienware M15x, makes a great high end hack too

Hi!

I'm quite new to Hackintoshs and would really want to set up an E5500 with Leopard myself. Is there any other post / walkthrough / guide that details the setup process and used leopard images that you can recommend for this particular laptop? I'd greatly appreciate any advice!

Cheers & Thanks in advance

Tom

Interesting about the Latitudes. I am also looking for a WUXGA laptop.

I also found the Vostro 1720 to be a good value as well and it seems that it will support OSX fully as well.

Check it out here: http://configure.dell.com/dellstore/config...C=NB_V1720_F2_E

Do you guys think the Vostro 1720 is a better deal?

It's a good laptop, obviously not as thin as the Macbook Pro, and much less battery life, but if plugged in it's great.

It's a good deal if you configure with a 9600M GT Graphics card (OS X Doesn't support the X4500), and the 1920X1200 screen. The CPU @ 2.4ghz will be slightly faster than a 2 year old MBP.

8GB RAM is about $300-500 more at Newegg. It's a good upgrade.

I'm assuming you are referring to the Vostro 1720 right?

as of 05/13/09, E5500 is out. dell put into the E5500 a gma x4500, so as far as this thread is concerned the E5500 will not receive supported graphics.

the E6500 however still comes with an nVidia Quadro NVS 160M. nothing from my searches has come back 100% supporting this graphics card but given that nVidia stuff works pretty good when it comes to 'hackintoshing', the E6500 is a way better choice than the E5500.

the vostro 1720 comes with a GeForce 9600M GS so this is a viable candidate

the HP HDX18 1100 is not even available on amazon from my searches. so out of four candidates we really only have two.

1. latitude E6500

2. vostro 1720

and of the two, I would prefer the latitude E6500

anyone with updates or further resources (for example, what ethernet nic does dell use for it's laptops, is there a hardware directory for this?), pls PM me.

Yes there is a hardware directory, sort of. Best is to search the forum with google for the hardware you are wondering about.

What works:

-CD, processor, chips set, HD, QE, CI, sound out, track pad (tapping), firewire (not perfect tho), USB, wireless, ethernet

what doesn't:

-sleep, firewire hard drives, card reader, not sure about slot, mics and mic input, trackpad scrolling (I think it can be fussed).
