Hello everyone, First of all I'm sure I'll make some english errors, sorry about that..

I've been monitoring the fan behaviour of my dell xps m1530 in windows, linux and mac; both windows and linux have the same results, so i'll take only the windows results.

Currently i'm on macos ideneb 10.5.6 vanilla kernel, but i tryed all kernel combinations and all powermanagement, thermal kext, i8kfangui etc...

the reason why i've done this is because the dell xps m1530 and m1330 but also other models have a well known thermal problem related to the nvidia gpu...and dell itself relased several bios revision to fix this issue...

So...These are the temperatures in win and macos during a normal use (messenger, surfing the web, listening music, and some other apps)

In this case the behaviour is correct in both systems, the fan starts when the cpu reach about 50° and stops at about 38°...the gpu follows the cpu temperatures with 20° of difference...

BUT if i try to stress the cpu/gpu, for example playing a game these are the results

windows during game: WIN-GAME.png

windows after game: WIN-AFTERGAME.png

so far so good...i've been playing for 2 hours with these temperatures and after the game the fan behaved as described in the picture

This is the situation in macos

during the game: MAC-INGAME.png

wow it seems better than windows.....no...because this is the temperature after 10 minutes...

during the game the fan never goes at full speed as it should but it keeps the medium speed all the time...

and after 10 minutes playing this is the result

macerror.png

The gpu's temperature in mac isn't monitored but it's pretty obvious that it's an overheat error, due to the fact that the fan never reach full speed but remains at medium speed

So now...i think that the computer's health is the first problem to solve...i have no knowledge to fix it, but i can provide all my time to test any possible solution...

the game i used for the tests is Ford Racing 2 Demo. it can be found here

http://downloads.feralinteractive.com/file...iversal.dmg.zip

any other xps owner can try it and see if they have the same problem...

ps

thank to all people working so far that makes this possible

My M1330 will vary its fan speed properly when stressed. The fan is going to often it is beginning to get very annoying. Your fans should be controllable via ACPI. I know the i8k module is not compatible with the XPS systems (I guess it could be made so).

could you try playing the demo game i posted for more than 15 min? it's strange because i also tried following your guide...but the result is the same...the fan respond properly as far as medium speed...never reaches full speed in game...

Patch your DSDT Should help

i used the dsdt.aml in wingrunr21 guide..but the same resoults...

I regularly play NFS Carbon on my Mac. I play it for hours at a stretch sometimes. I also visit the 3D online communities like Second Life. I never had a overheating problem. The fan does seem quite full of life. But, Ill give a shot at the demo. Thanks for bringing this up.

Edit: So here are the results: I did play your game and I did get your results. Then I turned it off and played NFS Carbon and it played like a dream as usual. The fan kept at medium while I played ford racing, when I played NFS Carbon, it jacked up to max. All this while my tin-can remained almost ice-cold!!

Analysis: I think it is a software error that we are getting in the Ford Racing. Somehow something is going wrong. The fan is speeding up when it needs to, and that is only when the GPU is stressed. I don't think Ford Racing is stressing the gpu much. Let me know what you think about this

You're right...i tried nfs carbon and i had no problem at all..the fan behaves erroneously only with ford racing 2...

I think your analysis is right..so there are some program/games who indirectly can compromise the behaviour...

i hope this i found is the only one...

ps. now the last goal is the internal mic...

it seems, but maybe i'm wrong, that mac native games are the problem...

because i'm playing without problem now with nfs carbon and counter strike source..

but these games run with wine/crossover/cider...

while games like ford racing 2 or simcity 4 are natives mac application...we need more testing...

can someone try other mac native games?
