My 10.5.6 install kernel panics consistently every 5-6 hours and I can't isolate the problem. Doesn't happen in WinXP so not ram or other hardware. Tried different kernels including Vanilla, etc ...

Can't find anything in the forum - Anyone with similar behavior ... ?

Ya, I'm running all the latest updates too and the new Safari - It's been doing this ever since my original install. Never crashed in earlier Leopard versions or even Tiger.

Any chance you could post your kext list and versions or just the ones you changed or added ... Thanks.

Finally figured it out - My drive was corrupted and had to be reformatted (disk utility wouldn't work). Reformatted and reinstalled - Not crashing anymore and hibernate works !!

Should mention that hibernate only works in the abscence of a battery management kext ... Oh well another challenge to figure out.

Cheers ...

yo trex how did you install osx i also have a dell ispiron 6400

There are lots of install methods in the forum if you read thru. Easiest way I've found is to install from the desktop of another running Mac computer. I've got a couple of real Macs and and another working PC w OSX so:

• Removed the hard drive from the laptop and connected to SATA/USB adapter (could also use a USB enclosure).

• Connected the USB drive to my other Mac and formatted it GUID.

• Inserted my Leopard DVD (the one you buy fr Apple - not hacked) into my Mac and ran OSInstall.mpkg from in /System/Installation/Packages/ . Installed OSX on the USB drive (~ 7 min).

• Installed Chameleon efi bootloader (search the forum for one of many installers),

• deleted AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext, AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext & AppleHDA.kext

• add tsc mach_kernel, AppleDecrypt & modified AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer AppleACPIPS2Nub ApplePS2Controller

• repaired permissions & reinstalled the drive in the laptop and booted into OSX

• to fix other hardware, added/replaced the following kexts: AppleHDA, HDAEnabler, IOSDHCIBlockDevice, SMBIOSResolver, trackpad prefpane mod.

If you don't have access to a computer already running Mac OS, you could also do one of boot 132 installs or consider one of the popular DVD distributions mentioned on this site. These only require a DVD in your laptop to install.

cheers ...
