wow
Have a P4 northwood 2.8 ghz (SSE2) now and i wonder or it is possible to change it for a 3ghz SSE3 without getting a new MB. i cnt get a higher speed cpu because the MB only goes to 3.2 ghz Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/1561-does-sse3-or-socket-478-exist/ Share on other sites
cyrana
Sure does. My last work computer had socket 478 and a P4 Prescott 2.8E which has SSE3. You can get them up to like 3.4GHz. Here is the 3.0 model: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819116171 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/1561-does-sse3-or-socket-478-exist/#findComment-9870 Share on other sites

Same price, damned i feel so stupid now But i believe i heard the prescotts are now made to use less wattage. My northwood gets to 69 degrees and cooled to 64 degrees when under 100% stress. So a prescot may not use to much watts in my comp Do you now your prescotts watt usage?? cyrana
Not sure off-hand, I'm at home currently (P-M system here, among some other things). Take a look at intel's page. I know they have fantastic spec sheets for their CPU lines. Tons of good stuff. wow
Bummer, stil uses almost twice as much juice at the same cpu speed. But i also just learned that your 3% instead of 20% was not by the sse3, so i can live now for a time with only my sse2 3ghz :-) Seems that the speed increase for sse2 -> sse3 is not worth the extra money/effort. I was hoping on a 6 times speed increase by upgrading to sse3. cyrana
At least I can say I've yet to have the system crash, which seems to happen a bit more if you have some weird patches installed.
