dublove
Hello all first post here from me hope you people are doing ok! Only stumbled on the osx86 site a few days ago but wow I had to check it out on my current wintel box. OSx runs great apart from my geforce6800agp. So i need to upgrade my rig anyway and this is the plan: Asus P5LD2-VM Intel p4 930 (but £££ is set to get slashed by 50% on April 23rd so might hold on and get higher spec) WD 320g sata2 hard disk 2g ddr2 (most likely corsair stuff listed as compatible with the motherboard) Going to use built in gfx, sound & lan. Gfx hopefully can be upgraded later when the time is right. Then i plan on putting in my existing 250gb sata hard disk & nec 4550 dvd burner. I have usb k/b & mouse, ipod & cannon printer on usb (osx detects all these ok so far on my asusp4c800) I do like the look of the mighty mouse though My current display is a lacie 22" electron blue crt which I run at 1600*1200@100hz - Will the gma950 do that or that res at 85hz at least? I am going to get a widescreen lcd but not for a few weeks and 60hz refresh is headache level Am I on the right track with this lot?
marliwahoo
Sounds like a real good plan. I don't know much about the nec burner - the pioneer 110d is fully working with osx as it is apple oem. The asus board is excellent as is the p. d930. You might consider the Intel 945gntlkr mb. Though you can overclock the asus mb (not the intel) the 945gntlkr has most of the same features and built in firewire, tpm and efi. According to others the tpm is not a big deal but if the efi is able to be hacked (it isn't yet) it could be a real help.
kernalzero
I've got that mobo and it works great but the GMA950 output on the back is only VGA, not sure if your 19" CRT is DVI or VGA. I'm currently displaying @ 1280x1024 @ 85hz and OSx says it can go to 1600x1200 (things get small on a 17" display at that size). I have 2 NEC drives, one in my laptop and one in my desktop and they both work well (model #'s below). Not 100% on that model # though, did you check the wiki? I agree with marliwahoo about the ability to eventually hack EFI but for right now and the coming months this board has and will serve me well. After that I'll upgrade to a real mac and probably convert this to a media center. ;-) goodluck
kernalzero
I just saw someone else with a fully working 10.4.5 system with that NEC drive so I'd say go for it.
dublove
Thanks for the advice guys. My crt is vga input so no problem there, when I get an lcd that will have both dvi and vga inputs (model i'm considering). Have looked at the intel mobo and it would be good but no overclocking & I've not been able to find anywhere in the uk that has any instock The other boon is that the asus is a matx board so I may well get rid of my hulking akasa eclipse case and put it in something smaller. kernalzero
you can get some really nice mATX cases, I got the Antec Minuet 300 case and love it. The modding possibilities are endless for this thing! I've already stealthed the DVDRW drive and look forward to doing more :-D I'll let you know how the asus board overclocks when I get my new HSF. Factory intel HSF's are {censored} and don't cool with a {censored}.
