this one was kind of tricky for me as well... the only installation version i can 100% verify mine works on is 10.4.5. i have the same device id as well.

first, login as root, or use sudo commands from the terminal to edit these files, only root can edit them.

then, go into

/system/library/extensions/atiradeonx1000.kext/contents/

and edit the info.plist with either texteditor or nano.

add "0x71C21002" (i think 1002 is right, whatever the ven id is for ati) under the area where it says "iopciprimarymatch" or something like it, you will strings of numbers just like this in there, add this string in front of them, making sure there is a space between them. save and close the file, delete "extensions.mkext" and "extensions.kextcache" from the /system/library/ folder.

then open disk utility and repair your permissions on your drive and reboot. upon the graphics coming on you should start noticing mouse artifacts/tearing. this tells you right away you have enabled qe & ci. check system profiler to make sure.

i have noticed with my Sapphire branded 512mb card, with the same ID and edit described above, that it only detects that i have 256mb on my card. it seems that it has a seperate id for the dvi output, and for some reason 256mb goes there and 256mb to the vga port, very odd. if anyone finds a fix for this, let us know!

I can confirm this will work. I have the same SAPPHIRE 512mb x1600. There is a problem to get the kext to load w/ATI brand x1600 cards. I didn't see alot of ATI brand 1600x cards that was successful. Reading through the forums. That is why I bought SAPPHIRE brand card. Just heads up if ur going to buy a x1600 card. I bought mine dirt cheap off ebay NIB (New In Box).

quietglow: the device id for the dvi should be listed in your PCI Cards in System Profiler. mine is 71E2, vga is 71C2. i havent tested to see if adding it works at all, let alone getting the other 256mb to show.

dewdoobrown: did you get your whole 512mb to report in system profiler?

sinteger Have you ever booted your x1600 in windows, and if so, did you have to run the ati install prog to enable the DVI? I ask because I've not run windows on this box, and my card only shows up in the profiler at one address. I'm wondering if my card is defective.

Also, what brand is your card?

Well, I bought Doom 3 for winders so I'm gonna install it on an extra drive and give this card a shot in its intended environment. I have a feeling that there may be something which the ATI software in windows does to allow you to select the dvi/analog on the card--we'll see.

;) Its kind of funny, but installing windows for me seems to be sorta the same kind of thing installing MacOS is for lots of people on the forums.

Can someone tell me why I have to hit the start icon to shut down the computer?! Kidding!

Update:

Bizarre! Once the ATI catalyst package is installed in Windows, the DVI port works! But in windows it is still reported as being at 71C2. Even more odd though is that if I then boot into OSX, it recognizes my new Samsung monitor (1600x1200), but the image quality is terrible--much worse than in VGA. Oddest? If I unplug my Samung monitor and plug in my Cinema Display (1920x1200)--it doesnt recognize it at all! So if you're going for the DVI aspect of the x1600 Pro, I think I'd go sapphire and not ATI brand.

Hey Sinteger,

Your explanation was what I needed to get my Sapphire x1600 Pro going on 10.4.4!

I'm not seeing any mouse tearing yet, but maybe I didn't stress it enough. Funny thing,

now XP won't boot, gives all kinds of errors. I'll go into safe mode, it's probably still trying to use

the onboard GMA 950.

Thanks again!!
