Hi all,

Please forgive me, I'm a total n00b when it comes to all things Mac (ie, my osx86 install this morning was my first experience of the Mac...)...

I've succesfully installed osx86 on my Compaq Evo N800v lappy, and have it dual booting XP, with wireless network access, internet access, etc... Thank you very much for the info on these forums which have enabled me to achieve this!!

Now, I have tried searching other threads to answer my queries, but I'm not getting anywhere... so please forgive me the very n00b topic... Basically, couple of problems:

1 - Resolution - only offered 1024 x 768. Need more, or I'm gonna get seriously bored of OSX *real* quick...

2 - Safari, crashes on certain sites (eg. yahoo.com)

Said lappy has an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500... I suspect both problems are due to drivers, and I keep reading about .kext files... so my questions are:

1 - Will the right driver fix my problems?

2 - How do I actually install a kext??? (bearing in mind I've been using a "Mac" (Hac?) for less than a day!!)

Any help or advice on my next step would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Thanks for yr patience...

Well, spent a fair amount of time today searching around, and I'm still no closer to an answer! It seems that other people seem to have other screen resolutions working fine , but are having fun with OpenGL, etc...

Can anyone help me please??

Thanks.

In darwin bootloader, type ?video You'll get a list of resolutions supported under vesa. Edit your boot list configuration with the supported resolution of your preference. Search the wiki tips and tricks for details on how to do this. I hope that's what you were looking for.

will fix your safari issues (did for me)

as to resolution, the ATI driver floating around here will not work for this card (tested myself)

you can try the boot options method, although i have a laptop so I've never tested it.

or you can wait and see if the new omni driver will work when it is released.

edit: i just tried the "Graphics Mode"="resolution here" with this card, it worked. Just make sure your card/monitor support the mode. Mine supports 1024x768 max, but i just booted with 800x600 and it worked...

edit: if you give it a resolution it doesn't support.. looks like it will force back to 1024x768

Thanks guys, this method worked a treat - Evo n800v boots to 1280x1024x32 - also found the wiki for it after this suggestion :)

My other BIG issue now is getting the wifi enabled - weird one, because it worked okay both times I installed osX86, up until reboot on both occasions. ie, after the installation, it picked up my wireless network, and I was surfing quite happily in safari and firefox - rebooted and suddenly no wireless...

Any ideas?? Once again, searched, but nothing :(

ps, I'm using a 3 Com OfficeConnect Wireless PCMCIA card...

Thanks again!!

Might be similar to my PCMCIA dlink wifi card. For some reason, network settings were not saved. Dont quite recall but try going to network preferences or network diagnostics and re-input your password settings. I had the same problem early on also but eventually was ok, just don't know which one of the two did the trick.

I got it working!!

That's a link to what I did in the end, using what was said ealrier on that thread.

Once again thanks for your help. It's looking good here - I think I may have a new favourite OS :P

Now for fixing the OpenGL issue... and I'm sure there'll be other probs as time goes on...
