Can someone list all the ati graphics cards that are supported by os x?

this site has a wiki page with all the cards and all the other hardware and what works or partially works.. have alook see it is packed with info and you could spend a few hours checking alot of hardware out to see how things look for your system

Sorry. But the forum is running out of organisation, the search is useless. This is also true for the wiki. If you search the board for an card, for example, you'll get 500 topics saying the the card Xyz is running, and another 500 topics saying that they wont work.

So please don't bother new poeple that maybe have spent 2 hours of searching (or at least 2 weeks like me) and try to confirm posts from 2005 to 2006.

@Inteluser: I recently changed from Matrox Millenium G450 (32MB) with VESA 3.0 support to a ATI Radeon 9600XT which most user stated as "working". Finally, Mac OS X recognizes my card without any modification to the usual kexts and loads the proper driver on startup.

I discovered that "working" for the most people means: CI and QE is reported by the system profiler and they are able to run OpenGL Games.

For me, it means:

- The overall performance of the GUI dropped down (I expected an overall perfomance increase because the processor has less to do with painting)

- The graphic card produces artifacts, the workaround is to use a tool called Mouseposé. THIS results into another dropdown of GUI speed (it simply repaints with each mouse move the screen)

- The card is reported as PCI and noch AGP, wich means that the AGP bridge is not loadet and this results into a massive speedloss

At the moment I don't recommend to buy a "supported" card. Try a cheap basic supported card (VESA 3.0 seems the best) if you want a system for daily use, but no 3D gaming. If the first driver apear (Omni is working on a ATI driver, there's also the MacVidea project) then you should take a closer look to the supporeted cards from this drivers.

This depends on what "working" means to you? With some mods to the wellknown files (okay... THIS time a search could help  ) you'll able to boot with this card and should be able to change the card to the native resolution of your screen.

Remember:

- Resolution is fixed, no change on the fly via control panel (either iTunes Visualizer won't work, to)

- crappy artifacts, especially if you use the scrollwheel. the mousepointer is currently not accelerated which results in this artifacts.

I think of switching back to my old matrox.

Full ACK!

oh i have a 9250pro (i know, its old) on my desktop, but more importantly, im thinking of getting a x1400 mobility for a new notebook im going to get soon, any ideas if the x1400 would work? (i dont care about the 9250)

I have an Acer Aspire 5672 which includes a X1400. Have been looking but afaik osx can't make use of its native resolution so am still running osx with 1024x768 :)

cant you at least mod your com.appple.boot.plist file with

<key>Graphics Mode</key>

<string>1280x1024x32@85</string>

and at least get that res.. i know you can do some options at boot to test before u mod the plist if you are worried dont ask as i cant remeber exactly how is it the -v switch foloowed by 1280x1024x32@85 or something like that I think it is somewhere in the wiki or genius bar how to mod your com.apple.boot.plist file
