So I've been doing some research about custom OS creation, and everything is done with the Linux kernel. I was wondering (since OS X is UNIX based), is it possible to take the Mac OS X (Leopard) kernel, and build an OS from scratch using it? Any help would be appreciated.

Check out PureDarwin

Many OS X technologies are patented by Apple. This is a major reason why the OpenDarwin project shut down.

There's not much benefit trying to build an OS on top of Darwin IMO. The Linux kernel is just as good, arguably even better, and you wouldn't tell the difference anyway. Then you're limited to OSS software like GNOME to run on top of it anyway, so it's just like Linux.

I would rather check out something like Opensolaris, or FreeBSD, or Linux. Opensolaris has some cool technologies, like Dtrace and ZFS...
