Persistent "Still Waiting For Root"

Since a lot of people are having this issue -- and its getting lost and confused in a lot of the threads -- I thought to make a consolidator thread.

To sum up what the issue is (and isn't, so as to keep the topic focused): Many people with non-IDE hard drives (e.g., SATA or SCSI) are unable to boot OS X natively, and get an error "Still waiting for root" every few minutes on boot. They can, however, boot OS X in VM Ware.

Some people with nForce 3 and 4 SATA cards have been able to solve the problem by modifying .kext device driver files, as posted in a variety of threads around this site. These modifications were included in the most recent sets of installer DVD (myz etc.) so such patching is no longer required.

Many people with SATA on the motherboard (is it on non-Intel motherboards only?), however, have not yet found any solution, and are unable to boot natively.

I think it would also help to make a chart of SATA device ID's and whether a solution exists. The SATA device ID can be found in the "Details" pane of the device properties in the Windows Device Manager, and consists of the 4 digits following "DEV_" followed by the 4 digits following "VEN_". To begin, mine:

Yes. In my case, it was caused by my DVD being too warm. Shutting down the PC and letting the drive/disc cool for a few seconds before booting from it solved the problem.

These forums would have more structure if the search function didnt suck so much. Searching almost always gives you results that have nothing to do with what your looking for.

If only you could use quotes and key words like AND and NOT to constrain your search. oh and if it automatically ignored words like 'a' and 'the'.

....funny, that search function is what got me onto a thread the sole purpose of which was to amalgamate the variety of fixes to my very problem. Seems to work ok for me :D

but yeah, talk about a hijacked thread, two posts of actual fixes (including the original post) and it was all downhill from there. Unfortunate, this thread had potential to be relevant to a lot of people.
