Hey guys!

Been a long time reader and huge fan of this site!

I'm looking to build my first Mac Pro-level desktop with the new Intel i7 chip. I noticed that people reported success with the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5, but given some of the problems that people on NewEgg reported with the board, I was thinking about getting GA-EX58-UD3R. It has the same chipset for the southbridge as the UD5 but with less fancy components it looks like.

I was wondering if anyone had any success with this board... Or if knowing that it has the same southbridge is enough.

Thanks!

I don't know of anyone who has this board, yet. But, I don't see any issues with getting it to be fully functional. The only differences as far as chips are concerned is that this board has the slightly older Realtek 888 codex audio chip, but there are plenty of drivers here for support.

I'd say go for it!

regards,

MAJ

This board is only $185 (after $15 rebate) at NewEgg:

It is hard to go wrong with an x58 Gigabyte board at that price (which has 14 perfect reviews at NewEgg so far)!

I think this board with be a major OSx86 winner.

(Do your OSx86 driver homework before buying of course.)

I am about to take the plunge, very nervous now. I am a NOOB and I have been reading here for about 6 weeks now. Either the GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R and the 920, or the Q6600 and the GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P.

What the difference is to me, after weighing all the pros and cons that I could, is about $200 more for the components for the i7 rig. Right now that doesn't bother me as i7 is to me more modern and would be my preference - IF - I could install either one of them.

And that is really the point of this question. I am looking at the install guides now very very carefully. I am sweating a bit because while I can follow instructions and I am not afraid to enter data in the terminal, there are so many terms tossed about on these forums that I can follow, but only just barely.

Looking at the basic install on the Q6600 path, it looks a little complex with plenty of BIOS tweaks and on, and on, and on. No, I am not expecting it to be as straightforward as a retail Apple install. But close would be nice. And once I get her going I want to concentrate on my photography again.

Looking at the i7 path, it seems to have a few steps to follow as well. More Unixy perhaps in i7 but ... at least there seem to be no particular BIOS hacks to have to do.

I need to find the easiest, softest path I Can find to get a handle on which system to choose. It really comes down to my own sanity and tackling this install process. Really, I don't mind following instructions if I understand the context. But I am afraid that much of what I am seeing seems confusing as to where I am in any given point.

There is a way to build your own retail DVD from a retail Apple DVD (I plan to get a legitimate copy). But I don't know if that outdated thread still applies as it was written in 07, and some say you should not use outdated methods when the newer methods are best.

Then there is the 132 method which seems to be preferred. And making an invisible partition for - some reason ... ?

I don't mean to sound like an idiot there. What I am saying is that I need to grasp what the steps of the process will look like, as much as I can before I do it. What do I need to download and ready on my current Mac first? Burn some things to a DVD? That appeared to be part of the nice vanilla install guide for the Q6600.

Sigh, sorry if I am rambling bit. I am ready to purchase and I need to really gain confidence as to which path is something that I can do, i7 or Q6600. Either would be a fine Mac I have no doubt. But I Really want the i7 and I have to really understand it's install process to make sense before I make my final decision.

I am so excited too. Can anyone please point me to the easiest guides or comment on the likelihood of a non Unix geek taking on the i7 install process at this point in these tutorials? Thanks for your patience in reading all of this, who ever you are.
