kurt
Hey, I am soon going to build a desktop system which I plan on running Mac OS X on primarily. Since I will be in control of the components going into the machine, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on the BEST (compatibility/performance wise) processor/motherboard combination to use. Also, are solo or duo the way to go? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/14592-best-processor-to-run-mac-osx86/ Share on other sites
declan
Well probably the one i would suggest is the intel core duo. Can't get more compatible. Which model depends on your budget. And motherboard, see my sig. Works like a champ. kurt
So the Pentium D dual core is the way to go with the actual speed in relation to my budget? thrunner
Don't confuse the "Core Duo" with Pentium D. Pentium D is desktop dual core with EMT64. "Core Duo" is laptop dual core shared cache without EMT64. Pentium Ds are the cheapest dual core solution (Pentium D 805 is $135 US). Calista
If you feel like you can hold out for a few months I would advice you to wait until the Intel-based Power Mac has been released. By then we'll know really well what kind of hardware that's suitable for a high performing system. I have built myself a (really inexpensive) system consisting of a Asus Vintage PH1 barbone (Asus P5GD1-VM) with a Celeron D 2.53 GHz CPU and I plan to sell it this week as right now it's not really worth the hassle of low performing graphics (GMA900), buggy sleep function etc, strange fan behavior. The fan will from time to time spin up at full speed making the computer sound more like a jet engine. I still prefer my slow G4 Mac Mini. Summer is coming, get out and get a lot of sun and cold beer instead of messing with a computer. It will be loads of time to deal with things like that in the cold and dark autumn.
