I've searched everywhere for a thread on the new X58 chipset trying to find everyones experiences to no avail, so I thought I'd start a thread to get everyone's brains together and find what works and save people the trouble of trying what we already know doesn't work.

My specs:

Motherboard: EVGA X58 with the latest bios as of 1/6/09

Processor: Intel 920 i7

6 GB G-Skill DDR 3 Tripple channel Memory

Drive 1: 500 GB Sata 2 - Currently running Win2k3

Drive 2: 120 GB Sata 2 - Target installation drive

Optical 1: Sata DVDRW

Optical 2: IDE Blue-ray Burner

Monitor 1: 46" HDTV

Monitor 2: 42" HDTV

Video 1: EVGA 8800 GT SOC

Video 2: EVGA 8800 GT SOC

With the new iPC 10.5.6 distro I get instant reboots on booting from the CD with every possible option passed to it, every possible bios change (including disabling all the CPU core's but one and hyperthreading, setting AHCI or IDE mode, and disabling every controller except the two sata's currently being used).

On the other hand the Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD I can do a full install reguardless of the bios settings with no options passed to the install kernel, as long as I select one of the non vanilla kernels during the install (can't remember the name off the top of my head ATM).

The reason mainly why I'm opening this thread is I have seen severe performance hits over other distro's I have tried vs the Kalyway DVD. I used to have an Acer Aspire 5315 that I replaced the wireless card in and had 100% functional with the iDeneb distro including wireless, sound, battery meter, and full application functionality and tested between the Kalyway and iDeneb and saw a major performance increase with iDeneb (for an unknown reason).

Preferable would be to find a distro that I can directly install 10.5.6 from due to the large amount of testing I perform which results in me wiping my machines often.

I am a full CNE that is quite familiar with every Microsoft OS on the planet, most *nix's, and even all the way back to some of the earlier Sun OS's and OS 2 / Warp.

I had developed a driver that I finally got functional with the hard wired nic in the Acer Aspire 5315 when my cobra was broken into and my entire laptop bag lifted.

Any idea's or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - Dex

Im not too familiar with your chipset however you might want to look into Munky's method of utilizing the efi partition. His method uses the 200MB unused partition which is part of the EFI standard. Apple honors this but doesnt utilize it. This lets you keep all your modified files and kexts on this parition and enables you to do a retail install. It really makes it easy to try out new distros as you will already have all of the kexts, that you know work, installed.

I assume that your benchmarks show the biggest hit with your drives?

The best way if your willing to experiment is Retail Installs. They are the absolute best. Also you will need to use the Voodoo Kernel AFAIK as the Vanilla kernel doesnt support Core i7 yet.

This is a great thread to start. I just finished a Q9550 and gigabyte board install. Everything went smooth for most part. So naturally, I'm ready for an i7 install :D

I was thinking of the Gigabyte X58-UD5 board and similar G-Skill memory. Can you check again and see what Kalaway install settings worked? Also, is it possible that a retail install could work?

Dex , I have the same motherboard and memory setup as you but was not able to get Kalaway to see my hard drive. Did you have to turn off the JMicron JMB362/3 chipset? This is what I have:

Motherboard: EVGA X58 with SZ1C bios

Processor: Intel 920 i7

Memory: 6 GB G-Skill DDR 3 Tripple channel Memory

Drive 1: WD 640 GB Sata 2 - Currently running Viscrap 64. (channel 0)

Drive 2: Maxtor 200GB Sata 2 - Target installation drive (tried channel 0,1, 8 and 9 without success)

DVD drive 1: Sata DVDRW

Video: EVGA 8800 GTX

lurscher, I saw the x58 thread. But this one was more specific in my case because Dex has the same motherboard. The x58 is more focused on the GA board.

In any case, if anyone else is also stuck. It's the dreaded JMicron problem. I patched the ISO with Chameleon and now everything is running.

cFoo ....Congrates

I built my system over the weekend Parts below

EVGA x58 SLI

EVGA 9800 GTX+

6 gig 1600 ram

Western digital black 1 TB HD

I am downloading the iDeneb DVD (1.4) right now

can you outline what you did in the bios and which ISO patches you applied so I can follow.

Thanks

Look forward to your reply

ok I have attempted to install iDeneb 10.5.6.

I have the following hardware:

EVGA X58 SLI MB

EVGA 9800 GTX+

Corcair 6 GIG 1600 RAM

WD Black SATA 1TB HD

Samsung SATA DVD

I install the iDeneb 10.5.6 install went ok

System reboots and I get the gray screen for 1/2 second and system crashes.

Any thoughts on what could be the issue.

Thanks
