Combine ATA and SATA question

Hi,

Im just about to start building a box and was wondering how best to use my drives. I have an 80GB ata 133 drive and a 250GB sata drive. I need to install OSX, gentoo and XP. The machine is going to be used for audio/video recoprding editing almost exclusively.

I was thinking i could install all the OS'es on the 80GB ATA and use the faster SATA for data.

Or vice versa?

Or perhaps i should just not bother with the ata133?

Any recommendations?

I only have one ata controller (ATA 100 apparently) on the motherboard so any drive on there will have to share the ide channel with the DVD drive.

Thanks

N

For data, it does't matter. It might if you use it as a system drive. However still no confirtmation.

I would use a 5400rpm 500gig drive for data, as oppose to a 500gig drive spinning at 10k or 7400rpm. I still have 5400rpm drives in great condition. I have replaced a lot of 7400 and 10k drives the past 2yrs.

He's gonna want a fast disk to transfer this data off - 5400rpm drive for dv files would be painful!

Hi,

thanks for the input.

Raptors are beyond the budget at the moment (actually everything is beyond the budget) and i read in bofors thread that "For SATA 300, it is much better to go with a SATA II drive like the Hiatchi 7TK250: " as the raptors dont have sata II interface yet. either way i cant afford another drive for the minute.

5400rpm wouldn't be up to the audio/video transfer speed.

I wonder if i have my DVD and OS drive on the same IDE chanel (i only have one and its ata100) will I have a miserable time burning DVDs too?

If not then I guess the question is whether there will be an appreciable difference between running

1) OS X and Logic audio on a PATA 7200 2MB drive with the data (audio) on a 250GB SATA II 16MB

and

2) OS X and Logic audio and the data all on a 250GB SATA II 16MB

I'll pull out the manuals on logic and have a look at what apple recommend for drives.

Yes, I agree. That's why I said for data :). Unless confirmed, you might as well have 5400rpm drive if the current drivers don't support it.

If memory serves me correcly, the transfer rate and the cache size has to be identical on both source and target drives. Or else you will run the lowest common denominator, which is the slowest of the two drives exchanging files.
