I got a new MacBook Pro for Christmas, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8GHz 1066MHz frontside bus with 6MB L2 Cache, 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 memory, 320GB Hard Drive and Leopard 10.5.6.

I want to install XP using Bootcamp. I ordered Windows XP Home 'SP3' for System Builders from Newegg (it hasn't arrived yet). However, now I'm reading on the net that I have to have XP 'SP2', only, not 'SP3'. Is that true? Thanks

Here's another link that indicates it's ok.

Yes. I am running it just fine on my black MacBook Penryn (early '08). The SP2 thing means that you can't use the SP0 (no service packs) or SP1. I actually got it working on my friend's MacBook with SP1. The installer for all the drivers wouldn't install, so I manually installed the ethernet driver, downloaded SP3, and installed the rest. That last part was for people just wondering. It does not apply to Codeseven.

Thanks Whizkid.

From looking into it more on the net, a 'Full' version of Windows XP Home or Pro 'already' updated to SP2 or SP3 will install fine. After installing an SP3 version of XP, Boot Camp version 2.1 needs to be installed. If you 'already' have XP SP2 installed and you want to 'Upgrade' it to SP3, then you have to install the Boot Camp 2.1 Update 'before' you install the SP3 Update.

Well, I 'think' thats right B)

Most will answer the question with 'No', but they may be misinformed.

I have a new MacBook Pro running 10.5.6. Searching the net I found several documents showing that a Full version of Windows XP version SP3 will install just fine.

Older documentation called out for 'SP2 only'. Later documentation called out for 'SP2 or Later'. Now you will read 'Windows XP version SP2 or SP3'.

Also adding to the confusion is the difference between 'Updating' to SP3 as opposed to 'Installing' XP version SP3. To 'Update' to SP3 requires a current install of XP SP2 and a download of the Bootcamp 2.1 Update. A fresh install of Windows XP version SP3 requires the Bootcamp 2.1 update 'after' XP is installed.

I just installed Windows XP version SP3 without any problems at all. I used the System Builders disc from Newegg.

Used Boot Camp Assistant to partition, inserted the XP disc, it automatically installed perfectly, ejected it (as I had read, I had to eject it by holding down the touchpad and re-starting, it booted right back into XP and ejected the XP disc, no problem), inserted the OSX Installation disc, it automatically brought up the Boot Camp program, followed the promps and it installed without a problem, it re-booted back into XP, downloaded the Boot Camp 2.1 Update and installed it without a hitch. Ejected the OSX disc. Went to Windows Update and installed all the latest Updates, Securities and Service Packs that it had, a total of 45 through both 'Express' and 'Custom' over several required re-starts and returns to Windows Update.

I now have a fully updated Windows XP version SP3 running smoother and faster than it did on my old PC!

Now to install Nod32 then O&O Defrag 11 and run it through it's paces then I'm done and happy!

JW, why do you put almost every other word in single quotes?

I guess he's the kind of person that likes to make the "bunny ear" finger sign (with both hands) a lot whenever they have a conversation. You know, those kind of people that like to think 'thrice' before speaking. Their mental pauses are clearly reflected in the nature of the distracting body expression.

/Just kidding. I have no idea what he 'does' that.
