Hi,

The Vista install on my PC (Intel based Gigabyte P35-DS3) is getting sloppy, and it's time to put it out of it's misery! I thought I would have a go at a dual boot Vista / OSX install when I get round to starting again and I wondered if someone can help me out with the following:

I have two options, firstly, a dual boot based on my Vista retail DVD and a Kalyway 10.5.2 image which I have gotten hold of.

Or, secondly, I actually have a retail Leopard DVD, as I also run an eMac, which is at version 10.5.4... could I use this instead of the Kalyway, which would seem preferable as it is a newer version, and I understand there are issues updating with a Kalyway hacked OSX, but... I know nothing about Boot-132 which I think I need to use a retail OSX DVD on my soon-to-be Hackintosh PC.

Whichever I do, I would like to make it as easy (and stable) as possible, the OS will both be living partitioned on the same physical drive, so if an older Kalyway is a much easier task than my retail OSX, then I guess that would be the way. I would ultimately like to migrate to OSX, only using Vista if I have to, so stability would be a major factor.

What is your opinion? also, if anyone can point me in the direction of good dual boot guides for either method, I would really appreciate it (seems that XP is chosen over Vista to dual boot in the majority of guides I have come across!)

Cheers,

Paul

I dont have a guide but I did it I normally would. I cant say you will have issues cause I am using a hacked Vista copy right now, so I have EFI loading on that too. But since you got a valid copy you should be fine. Install Vista make two partitions one for Windows the other just leave there. When Vista is installed I then installed osx on the other partition. You might need to go ahead in windows and format that as something for disk utility to find it right. Format it as usual to osx file system and install. I am using Atkos so it might be a little different. I used the bootloader there for changing between Vista and Windows. i did have an issue with the bootloader for Vista being wiped out cause I installed OSX but I believe that is because I am using OEM bios emulator for Vista to be activated, you might not have the same issue. If you do have the issue you can insert the vista dvd and fix the boot issue. i did that then installed easybcd http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 to then choose vista or mac. choosing mac gives me the darwin bootloader.

Hope that helps ya out some

Ok, I installed Leopard alongside Vista perfectly the first time :)

Use the iATKOS v5i distro which is 10.5.5, and theres a guide around on how to dual boot it perfectly.

My tip is to basically check EVERY part of your computer and write them down do you can select the right ones, video card and sound drivers are better to install later same with network drivers,

Always have the Vista Install disk handy incase you get an error :)

That guide there is for the original iATKOS but it works the same with new version, Good Luck!!

Thanks for the advice above guys, I used the iAtkos v5i DVD as mentioned in the post above, and managed to install OSX onto my PC, but now when it loads from my Vista/OSX boot selector, I get a grey 'no entry' sign inside a box on the middle of the screen, over the Apple logo!

I have read from this site http://apple2pc.blogspot.com/2008/05/still...oot-device.html that it is related to the OSX bootloader not knowing what drive the OS is on, or 'Still waiting for root device' the only issue is that whatever drive and partition I try to direct it to after pressing F8 during Darwin Bootloader, nothing works!

I have three physical drives in my PC, the first (Disk 0 in Computer Management in Vista) has three partitions and shows up as such: Windows Vista (C:), File Store (E:) and Mac (D:). The Mac partition is showing formatted as HFSJ, Healthy (Primary Partition).

Disk 1 and Disk 2 are just big file stores. All drives in my PC are SATA.

When I go into the Darwin Bootloader by pressing F8 at startup, it shows the following: hd(0,1) Windows Vista, hd (0,2)File Store, hd(0,3) Mac.

I would assume from what I have written, and going by the guide, that I should type rd=disk0s3, which should direct it to drive 0, partition 3, but all I get is the grey no entry sign after a while!

I should also state here I have messed with the settings in the BIOS as described, and this makes no difference to OSX booting (and actually makes Vista unstable, with bluescreens during the Vista boot process!) so I put them back to normal.

What am I doing wrong? I have set up the dual boot in Vista as shown in the guide that was linked to in the second reply to my original message, this allows me to boot into Vista with no problems, and OSX is selectable, but I get the issue described above!

I should also say that when I installed the iAtkos v5i DVD, it did not give me the option described below, I think this is the main problem, but there is no option for 'Utilities -> Darwin Boot' during the install process (maybe it was only on the iAtkos v1 installer?).

[Now Close Disk Utility and Select Utilities -> Darwin Boot. Type Y at the prompt.

At the prompt when it asks for the Disk Number enter 0. For the Partition Number if your Leopard Partition is 2nd on the disk, then enter 2 and so on.

Accept the following prompts and you should see a success prompt saying that so many block of data were written successfully.]

Please can someone help me out here?!

Cheers,

Paul

So you followed the guide 'I' gave to you directly? I skipped the Darwin Boot thing, it booted straight into Vista for me to setup the bootloader, Maybe remove OSX and try installing it again.

This time see if it boots into Vista, if not put in the install disk and go into Repair and do a startup repair, then do everything else the guide says, I skipped that entire section ;)
