johnnyb
Hey guys, I am running an ASUS NCCH-DL motherboard, and had it booting to a 200GB Western Digital PATA drive. In xbench, I was getting killed in my performance marks due to bad ATA performance. I had the primary master setup as my boot drive I had the secondary master and slave set up for my DVD writers. I switched out the Western Digital for a new Samsung 250GB SATA-II drive (board says it only supports SATA-I, but its working so I do not have jumper installed on drive to downclock it to SATA-I) I used Acronis TrueImage to clone the WD to Samsung - no issues (just can't grow partition, but can't get past that 137GB limit anyway.... dang it!!) Booted up perfectly fine, but its still showing as an ATA device in System Profiler. XBench shows no performance gains. I deleted the kext cache and rebooted, still no change. I'm assuming that i need to get a kext to support SATA and stop it from using the AppleGenericATA? But how? The Asus NCCH-DL runs on an Intel 875 chipset - in case anyone doesn't know - and its a dual xeon board. It should be one heck of a screamin system if the drive would keep up! Thanks very much in advance! Here's my KEXTSTAT in case it helps... BTW - What the heck is that "don't steal Mac OS X" thing towards the bottom?!??! johns-computer:~ John$ kextstat Index Refs Address Size Wired Name (Version) <Linked Against> 1 1 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kernel (8.4.1) 2 12 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kpi.bsd (8.4.1) 3 15 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kpi.iokit (8.4.1) 4 16 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kpi.libkern (8.4.1) 5 14 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kpi.mach (8.4.1) 6 10 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kpi.unsupported (8.4.1) 7 1 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.iokit.IONVRAMFamily (8.4.1) 8 1 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.driver.AppleNMI (8.4.1) 9 1 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.iokit.IOSystemManagementFamily (8.4.1) 10 1 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.iokit.ApplePlatformFamily (8.4.1) 11 31 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kernel.6.0 (7.9.9) 12 1 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kernel.bsd (7.9.9) 13 1 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kernel.iokit (7.9.9) 14 1 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kernel.libkern (7.9.9) 15 1 0x0 0x0 0x0 com.apple.kernel.mach (7.9.9) 16 10 0x2471f000 0x9000 0x8000 com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily (1.8) <11> 17 4 0x2472b000 0x4000 0x3000 com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily (1.2.0) <11> 18 2 0x24765000 0x37000 0x36000 com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform (1.0.3) <17 16 11> 19 0 0x247b1000 0x5000 0x4000 com.apple.BootCache (25.1) <6 5 4 3 2> 20 4 0x24812000 0x32000 0x31000 com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily (1.4.6) <6 5 4 3 2> 21 0 0x24929000 0x4000 0x3000 com.apple.driver.AppleAPIC (1.1.0) <11> 22 0 0x2497a000 0x4000 0x3000 com.apple.driver.AppleSMBIOS (1.0.7) <11> 23 0 0x249fb000 0x4000 0x3000 com.apple.driver.AppleACPIButtons (1.0.3) <20 18 17 6 5 4 3 2> 25 0 0x2b370000 0x5000 0x4000 com.apple.driver.AppleRTC (1.0.2) <17 5 4 3 2> 27 0 0x2b4a7000 0x3000 0x2000 com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPCI (1.0.3) <18 17 16 11> 28 2 0x2b4af000 0x5000 0x4000 com.apple.driver.ApplePS2Controller (1.1.0) <11> 29 8 0x2b530000 0x16000 0x15000 com.apple.iokit.IOStorageFamily (1.5) <6 5 4 3 2> 31 7 0x2b56b000 0x1a000 0x19000 com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily (2.4.0) <11> 32 0 0x2b599000 0xd000 0xc000 com.apple.driver.AppleUSBUHCI (2.4.0) <31 16 11> 33 3 0x2b5bb000 0xd000 0xc000 com.apple.iokit.IOATAFamily (1.6.0f2) <11> 34 0 0x2b5cd000 0x6000 0x5000 com.apple.driver.AppleGenericPCATA (1.3) <33 16 11> 35 0 0x2b606000 0x12000 0x11000 com.apple.driver.AppleUSBEHCI (2.4.0) <31 16 11> 36 0 0x2b779000 0x3000 0x2000 com.apple.driver.ApplePS2Keyboard (1.1.0) <28 20 11> 37 1 0x2b7b2000 0x16000 0x15000 com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily (1.5.0) <6 5 4 3 2> 38 0 0x2b7ef000 0xb000 0xa000 com.apple.driver.AppleUSBHub (2.4.0) <31 11> 39 0 0x2b8a5000 0xb000 0xa000 com.apple.driver.AppleIntel8254XEthernet (1.1.2) <37 16 5 4 3 2> 40 4 0x2b8eb000 0x15000 0x14000 com.apple.iokit.IOSCSIArchitectureModelFamily (1.4.6) <11> 41 0 0x2b90f000 0x4000 0x3000 com.apple.iokit.IOATAPIProtocolTransport (1.4.3) <40 33 11> 42 0 0x2b9c9000 0xa000 0x9000 com.apple.iokit.IOATABlockStorage (1.4.3) <33 29 11> 43 2 0x2baa7000 0x8000 0x7000 com.apple.iokit.IOCDStorageFamily (1.4) <29 5 4 3> 44 1 0x2bae3000 0x13000 0x12000 com.apple.iokit.IOSCSIBlockCommandsDevice (1.4.6) <40 29 11> 45 1 0x2bb0e000 0x5000 0x4000 com.apple.iokit.IODVDStorageFamily (1.4) <43 29 5 4 3> 46 0 0x2bb41000 0x12000 0x11000 com.apple.iokit.IOSCSIMultimediaCommandsDevice (1.4.6) <45 44 43 40 29 11> 47 0 0x2bc16000 0x6000 0x5000 com.apple.iokit.SCSITaskUserClient (1.4.6) <40 29 11> 48 0 0x2bc40000 0x3000 0x2000 com.apple.driver.AppleUSBComposite (2.4.0) <31 11> 49 0 0x2bd26000 0x5000 0x4000 com.apple.iokit.IOUSBHIDDriver (2.4.0) <31 20 11> 50 0 0x2bd8a000 0x9000 0x8000 com.apple.iokit.IOUSBUserClient (2.4.0) <31 11> 51 2 0x2bd9d000 0x17000 0x16000 com.apple.iokit.IOAudioFamily (1.5.6b2) <31 11> 52 2 0x2bdb4000 0xd000 0xc000 com.apple.driver.AppleAC97Audio (1.0.0) <51 11> 53 0 0x316ca000 0x4000 0x3000 com.apple.driver.AppleAC97AudioIntelICH (1.0.0) <52 16 11> 55 2 0x316f7000 0x1b000 0x1a000 com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily (1.4.2) <16 6 5 4 3> 56 1 0x31712000 0xf000 0xe000 com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport (1.4.2) <55 16 6 5 4 3> 57 0 0x2bd87000 0x3000 0x2000 com.apple.driver.ApplePS2Mouse (1.2.0) <28 20 11> 58 0 0x31721000 0x46000 0x45000 com.apple.ATIRadeon9700 (4.2.4) <56 55 16 11> 59 0 0x3179d000 0x4000 0x3000 com.apple.driver.AudioIPCDriver (1.0.0) <51 5 4 3 2> 60 0 0x317a1000 0x2000 0x1000 com.apple.driver.AppleAC97CodecAD198x (1.0.0) <52 11> 61 0 0x317a3000 0x3000 0x2000 com.apple.Dont_Steal_Mac_OS_X (4.0.0) <6 4 3 2> 62 0 0x39e37000 0x6f000 0x6e000 com.cisco.nke.ipsec (2.0.0) <4 2> 63 0 0x2d23d000 0x2c000 0x2b000 com.apple.AppleDiskImageController (113.3) <29 6 5 4 3 2> 64 0 0x2d1ad000 0x4000 0x3000 com.apple.driver.XsanFilter (2.6.2) <29 11> Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/14168-upgraded-from-pata-sata-with-no-improvement/ Share on other sites

byebyegt1
Did you ever manage to find a fix for the slow acess times? I'm having exactly the same problems on my asus pch-dl mobo. Only reaching about 2meg a second in xbench. Only reaching about 2meg a second in xbench. Yes!!! I meant to repost. Actually, the fix is VERY similar to fixing my sound card. Short and skinny is: 1) I booted into Windows XP, and noticed that the ATA and SATA controllers had ID numbers in their device driver name. Look for something like "25A2" in your ATA controller driver name, and "25A3" in the SATA controller name. 2) Modify the AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext file to contain your ID's inside the IOATAFamily.kext 3) run "sudo chown -R root:wheel" for your extensions folder, plus I'd also run the Repair Permissions util. 4) Wack the kext cache files reboot!! Do both SATA and PATA so that your CDROM's and burners speed up! Worked like a charm for me!!!
