Hey OSx86 community

I recently tried to boot retail on my AMD rig (Asus M2npv-vm mobo; nForce 430 chipset) with the new voodoo kernel

I created a boot 132 cd w/ the voodoo kernel from this tutorial

In it i included the AppleNforceATA.kext from my current 10.5.5 installation along w/ other necessary kexts.

When I boot the cd and then the leopard retail dvd, the nforceata.kext is loading fine. But I still get the dreaded "still waiting for root device" error

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

MGJulius

Did you try boot with these parameters?:

rd(0,1)/mach_kernel.voodoo -v -legacy boot-uuid=<your drive's uuid number here>

Did you also press F8 and then escape before swapping the Boot-132 with the retail install DVD?

I booted with the exact same parameters...but I did not press F8 then escape

Do i press F8 then escape when the boot-132 cd is finished loading or after I type 9f or when?

And does the boot-uuid need to be of the hard-drive or the intrid.img?

First, you let the Boot-132 CD boot.

You then press F8 to get to the darwin boot prompt and after that ESC to get to the part where you can pick a boot device (the f9 thing).

You swap your CD for the retail DVD and wait until the DVD-Rom lamp turns off. After that you simply press enter and the system should tell you that it will boot from the default drive and the DVD will be read.

You should now be presented with the 10 second countdown but here you press F8 again to get to the darwin menu once more. Also, the retail DVD should show up as the selected boot device.

Now you have to enter the full booting parameters. You know, rd(0,1), etc.

Make sure that you enter the uuid number of the retail DVD here! It has to be exact.

Once the install DVD boots and the installation starts, you can open Disk Utility to get the UUID of your target partition. If you repartition or reformat the drive, this number will probably change so make sure you get it right!

When the installation is finished you will have to repeat the boot process with your Boot-132 CD but this time select 80 (first HDD) as the boot device and use the uuid number of your Leo partition for the boot-uuid parameter.

The most important part is to get a working Boot-132 CD made. Don't get carried away putting all of the kexts you think you need in there at once. I made at least 5 or 6 coasters before getting it right. Just be patient and use only the very minimum! Trust me, it will make your life easier at this stage. I attached the ISO file I based my Boot-132 CD on. I only added the AppleVIAATA.kext (to my image, not the attached) to avoid the dreaded "waiting for root device" problem.

Follow the little tutorial I made and you should be OK.

Once you have your boot-132 CD ready, you can pretty much follow Munky's tutorial from the link I gave you. That's what I did and it worked.

Good luck!

EDIT: added the AppleVIAATA kext in case you need it, and also the System.kext from Leo 10.5.5.

orig_boot_132.iso.zip

AppleVIAATA.kext.zip

System.kext.zip

Thanks man appreciate it. I was entering the uuid of the intrid.img instead of the leopard retail dvd

Again thx a bunch gonna go try it now...wish me luck

Good luck! Let us know how it went.

EDIT: I think I forgot to post the link to Munky's excellent retail installation guide. Here:
