So since I've seen the new GTA IV system requirements, I've decided I need to upgrade. The game recommends a quad core;being either Intel or AMD. My C2D e6300 barely passes the minimum so I've decided to look around for upgrading. I've found the following combination.

GIGABYTE GA-MA770-DS3 AM2+/AM2 AMD 770 ATX All Solid Capacitor AMD Motherboard

Nothing to fancy and has everything I need.

New CPU:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103244

AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 95W Quad-Core Processor

I've decided that the Phenom gives you the best bang for your buck and is only slightly slower than the Q6600.

Anybody have any suggestions of any other motherboard and processor that would total up to about the same of $200?

The big thing with games is really the Graphics card. Your dual-core should actually be fine - you should look towards a faster graphics card, depending on how good yours is currently.

I wouldn't recommend an AMD system if you want to run OS X (which is what this forum is about, right?)

Actually, the Phenom quad core will run slower than a fast Intel dual-core in many games, maybe even GTA 4. Games aren't that well threaded yet - it's about single threaded performance.

I would recommend a Gigabyte G31M-ES2L = $59 + Intel E8400 - $165 or Q6600 - $190.

But first look at your graphics card. Your system will probably run the game brilliantly if you have an 8800 or so.

I'm currently not going to attempt to run OS X anymore. I do have an 8800GT.

There's a little comparison between them. I guess you could say I would see that much of a difference gaming wise. Oh and I guess you can't really say my dual-core is really fast..it's the lowest end C2D.

Well, I just played it on my I7, and it just depends on what monitor you use. I have a 9800gtx+ and the best resolution I can get is 1650to900. And not even everything to the max. Not to mention all the graphic bugs...

So to run the game on 30" 2560to1600 I have to buy me two 280gtx running on SLI. And the game doesn´t even start with ATI-cards. So no option there.

This is bulls..t, rockstar you can do better.

Wait for the patches to come, and save your money for the hardware you have to buy then....

mmm...OK done some research, GTA 4 is indeed best enjoyed on a quad core. I still recommend the Q6600 because it beats every Phenom out there in gaming, even before you overclock it, and you might just be able to drop it straight into your current motherboard.

No, my current motherboard is a proprietary HP ASUS board. It won't just drop in. I've decided to actually look into getting the 9850 Black Edition. I've looked around a bit and found that it is only slighty slower than the Q6600, and about 30 bucks cheaper?
