mrbash
Hi All, I need some help to isolate the source of a panic. I don't think it's a kernel panic because I don't get the kernel panic message in multiple languages, instead I get a grey overlap on the top half of my screen, everything hangs, but the mouse can still move. I have noticed that this panic/crash occurs when a storage device spins up. This includes hard drives and CD-ROM drives. It does not happen all of the time, but when my system does panic/crash it occurs when I have inserted a new CD or opened a hard drive. I suspect that when an app tries to go through the device list this occurs. My problem is that when this crash occurs I am unable to find any crash log. Perhaps as a first step someone could tell me how I can ensure that a crash log is created. Then I was thinking I could try writing an application that will go through the list of storage devices on my system in an effort to reproduce the crash. I have an Asus P5K-SE/EPU with a Quad Core 2.4. Nvidia 7900 GT Any help would be greatly appreciated. mrbash
Both. I have the devices on both the SATA and the IDE controllers. I should state that the hang/panic does not occur every time I access or list the devices on my system, but it only occurs during that kind of an operation. I would like to be able to generate some sort of a crash log when this happens, but I don't know how to do that. mrbash
I have been trying this for a few days now and the system seems much more stable. I turned off the IDE controller in my BIOS. I'll update in another week to let you guys know how it has been going.
