Hi,

I popped in the Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD and loaded up to the install screen. My drive is detected as a 128GB SATA drive. In the BIOS it is correctly detected as 500GB.

I feel like there's a quick fix for this but I can't seem to search in the forums.

Specs:

MB: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R

Proc: Intel Quad Core Q8200

Any ideas anyone?

yes - send it back. had the same problems with seagate disks. is it the 32mb cache version?

yes - with hackintoshes (maybe real macs also). it seems to be some problem with the firmware. I could have tried to flash the firmware, but prefered to give it back. take instead the Western Digital AAKS - less cache but much faster - you will love it !

nothing is wrong with the drive......

do you have achi enabled with the corresponding kexts? i know that was what fixed the issue for me when i had your problem

hundreds of problems with that disk in the net......and stupid me - I believed that.....I should have only fixed AHCI to make it work :hysterical:

Same problem with WD 640GB SATA. Setting the AHCPI to manual screws up the BIOS setup. The BIOS sees the disk as 136GB. Only the Auto configurations works on the BIOS. Any ideas? Use Gigabyte EP45 MB. :(

Found it, set AHCPI IS THE SOLUTION. Otherwise only 128G is viewed. :D

Hackintosh runs great on EP-45 with 10.5.8 [... soon 10.6] ;)

my suggestion is to use some other company disks - Maxtor or Western Digital.

Seagate sucks, kinda. My local Fry's has hundreds of the seagate disks - all of which are returned and discounted. ;)

Actually Seagate has the best reputation out of all the brands mentioned in this thread. I own 5 Seagate drives including the one mentioned with firmware issues reported by many, but all of mine have been very reliable and very fast. They have 5 year warranties.

Stay away from Maxtor at least! I worked for years doing tech support for major companies (top 3 brand oem's) and there were so many Maxtor hard drives going bad that we'd have to replace under warranty, that whenever a customer would call and I'd look up his computer, if he had a Maxtor drive I would have them run diagnostics on it automatically.

But then Seagate bought Maxtor recently, didn't they??

IDK nowadays...

But I can recommend Seagate, IBM, or Hitachi.

As for the 128GB limit, check your disk to make sure you don't have a jumper set to limit it to 128GB for older OS's. Also it could just be a BIOS setting, so try default BIOS settings on it.

Exactly in my 25+ years of using PCs I have never had a Seagate drive fail on me or even lose any data what so ever so I don't see where all this Seagate hate comes from.

For sure in that time I have had exactly one Maxtor drive that has lived on once the warranty has expired have not bought any since Seagate took over so don't know what they are like now.

Here again I have had good luck with the few of the latter brands I have owned but then again I never was unfortunate enough to have bought any of the Deathstar line of drives, I have also had reasonable luck with Western Digital with only a half dozen or so drives having gone {censored} up.

Yep something weird going on for sure I have that model as my boot drive in my main machine never had a problem with the size detection perhaps a flashing to the latest BIOS may be in order as well if the OP is not up to date in that area.

Make sure the AHCPI is set in the next BIOS tab, otherwise only 128GB is viewed irrespectively of how it shows in the auto rdetection
