Is there a list of known working hardware?

Is there a wiki or other form of a list somewhere which lists hardware known to work with OS X?

 

I'm thinking of building an inexpensive machine with similar content to a Mini except without the size constraint.

 

What inexpensive motherboard and CPU can I use? Is the motherboard issue more of a chipset issue?

Just scroll down to where it says Hardware, and look up your OS version. That page has been a life saver to me many times.

unfortunately, most people no longer maintain the HCL and instead create thousands of individual threads asking if the same hardware will work. but of course, some times thats necessary since the HCL isnt maintained much (damn positive feedback loops)

Very true. Not sure why everyone decided to stop updating it- or if people just collectively had a brain-fart that no longer allows anyone to figure out how to update it. (And isn't it past time for a 10.5.5 HCL anyway?) It was (and still is for a handful of updated builds) a great resource. Otherwise- it's the 1,000,000 threads + "just guess" method.

my suggestion is to look through people's signatures and identify commonly used components. from there, search this site and others to find common issues so you're prepared for any issues along the way.

yeah, seeing the part combos people are using is quite helpful when determining what works well

for example, i purchased the motherboard in your signature
