  1. Any word on the DWA-542 (AR5416, hardware id 0x0023)? It "works" in that it's in the atheros and atheros21 kexts out of the box and does do its job. It just also happens to cause complete freezes and kernel panics when used with more than one core active.
  2. [DSDT] nForce 680i DSDT Development

    What is the SMB kext?
  3. Gparted fuxored my ability to boot Windows!

I realize this thread is pretty old, but I thought I'd share some of my experience for anyone who stumbles on to this problem/thread. Gparted *is* gpt aware (at least now in 2010 it is). The problem is that its behavior conforms to the spec—it makes a "protective" mbr table with one partition the size of the disk so that non-gpt aware software doesn't think it's unformatted. Unfortunately, Apple's bootcamp instead uses a non-standard hybrid MBR/GPT scheme so that the Window's side is booted with an emulated bios from the MBR. Thus, to restore the ability to boot into windows after using a program like gparted to edit the gpt, one must correct the mbr to reflect the proper partition divisions (though, you only really need to put the windows partition in there (on second thought, the read only hfs drivers probably need the mac partitions in the mbr to work)). This can be accompished manually with osx's fdisk or slightly more automated with gdisk / 'gpt fdisk'. The gdisk hybrid feature does not work quite the same way that OS X's hybridization does, but it works and restores the ability to boot into windows. Also to note, if you use VMware to virtualize your bootcamp partition as well, you will need to update it's "MBR" for the virtual disk it creates to boot off of. The easy way to do that is to delete and recreate the vm from the newly sized partition but you can also do it manually by fdisking one of the virtual disk file.
  4. Is there a 64bit nforceata that works fine for hdd and only has problems with sata optical drive burning? My dvd drive being PATA (IDE), that's not much of a lose for me. Also, with a 64bit kernel, I can run both cores. Unfortunately, in 32bit mode, I have to disable one to prevent the system form locking up within the first 5 minutes of booting.
  5. SL on a EVGA 680i SLI Mobo?

I have a reference 680i and suffer from the same issue. Has anyone found out why/how to make this not the case?
  6. With a core disabled either by BIOS or by cpus=1 boot arg, the system is completely stable. Without, the system will boot fine—er, rather it's never failed during a boot yet—but within 1 to 20 minutes of use the system completely locks up and becomes unresponsive (including no mouse movement, not capslock feed back). If sound is playing it will loop a short clip like video games do when locking/before blue-screening in windows. (Note, dual cores in windows 7 is perfectly stable, just previous experience). I cant find anything that looks strange in the system logs before or during a crash. My blind guess would be the way the nForce board handles some CPU state or interrupts is different than what osx expects. Install info: 10.6.2, Vanilla Kernel; Chameleon 2 RC3, DSDT sound mod for 885. SMBOIS is a modified macpro3,1. Extensions: fakesmc.v2 NullCPUPowerManagment OpenHaltRestart PlatformUUID ApplenForceATA.slash LegacyHDA System info: Core 2 Duo E6400 nForce 680i reference board (the EVGA board, though mine's branded BFG) 4 Gb DDR2 800 (2 g.skill 2 ocz) GeForce 8800GTS 640 320 Seagate SATA Lite-on DVD±R PATA Dlink w/ Atheros 5416 PCI Speedstep and "thermal management" measures are disabled in BIOS [and I am very certain heat is not an issue]
  7. Verdant, thanks for your wonderful guides on leo and snow leo for the nforce afflicted. Couple of questions: what are lspcidrv.kext and nForceIOATAFamily.kext for? Can you provide a link to voodoomonitor.kext—I can't find any links besides on Russian forum I don't really want to dig through? Finally, I am having the (apparently normal?) instability issues when running more than one core on a 680i. I'm guessing this means more DTDS modding, could you point me in the right direction?
  8. late 2007 white macbook, 10.5.6 playing around with apps from snow beta* [in 10.5.6], they didnt work, some were marked incompatible, those that weren't just crashed on launch. at some point or another (maybe after a restart) finder starts into a crash on launch loop(since launchd likes to restart it). i did not replace, execute, or even copy the other finder.app onto my hd, nor did i play with any of the system libraries or bsd-area. Console tells me that: Process: Finder [372] Path: /Applications/finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder Identifier: com.apple.finder Version: ??? (???) Build Info: Finder_FE-6072200~19 Code Type: X86 (Native) Parent Process: launchd [125] Date/Time: 2009-03-17 19:34:18.040 -0500 OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.6 (9G55) Report Version: 6 Exception Type: EXC_BREAKPOINT (SIGTRAP) Exception Codes: 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000 Crashed Thread: 0 Dyld Error Message: Symbol not found: __NSConcreteStackBlock Referenced from: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DAVKit.framework/Versions/A/DAVKit Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib i've replaced the file with the one from the 5.6 combo update, and reinstalled the whole of the combo update, unfortunately this did not elevate the problem. when trying to open the finder from terminal it generates this error: "LSOpenFromURLSpec() failed with error -10810 for the file /Applications/finder.app." but it appears to be fairly generic. any help that doesn't involve a reinstall would be much appreciated.
  9. building a hackintosh for a media center. wanted to know what the minimum power i will need for allways smooth 1080p h.246 playback. would a dual core atom be able to do this or is something more powerful (and with discreet gfx) needed?
  10. unfortunately, most people no longer maintain the HCL and instead create thousands of individual threads asking if the same hardware will work. but of course, some times thats necessary since the HCL isnt maintained much (damn positive feedback loops)
  11. New Hack Build

no, actually, not wanted. nvidia chipsets suck for osx, get a gigabyte p45/x48 quad core is probably overkill for most needs, games (why would you be playing these in osx) are optimised for 2 cores at best (as of now). ddr3 is a waste of money for now, get 4gigs of corsair low lattency ddr2 800 for 35 bucks on newegg. psu is a waste of money and electricity (and thus a further waste of money) you could (and should) use much lower wattage. gfx is not only overkill but also not particually good working right now, a 9800 would be a much better choice for your pc
  12. so i think im going to go with the dfi mini lanparty (only matx p45 w/o integrated gfx) and a e8400 (or an e5200 depending on the easy of oc with that board and osx) 3GHz C2D should take case of plex/boxee/xbmc 1080p nicely. how powerful gfx would you suggest for this type of machine? im guessing 9600 8800gt 9800gt are all overkill but how far down can I go?
  13. What would be the most compatible/best mATX board to run osx on for a media center? The G45 boards have a great chipset but have serious compatibility issues with osx right now, no the least of which being zero support for the 4500hd gfx chips thus at least requiring dedicated video card (and thus ruling out Gigabyte as they dont have a real 16 lane PCIe on thier g45 boards). Of the P45 DFI "Lan Party," it seems it works ok, but still has some annoinces (lack of sleep functionality et al). The G35/G31s seem to have much better support/compatablity but are, of course, last generation technology and would still require dedicated a video card for 1080p playback. What are your thoughts as to the best C2D mATX board for osx (for primary use as a quiet media center)?
  14. but wut happens if you divide by zero
  15. i have the DIR-625 a1, 1.06 fw, and the card connects w/o a password, but cant connect to wpa or wpa2. my macbook is fine so i dont think its the router, at least its not only router by itself. in osx the card only shows the option for wpa not wpa2 like my macbook does, even though it deffinately supports it. (and limiting the network to g instead of n didnt effect the wpa issue.)
