Hello there,

Only very recently i discovered the OSX86 project and was very interested in trying to get it to work!

The main reason is that i built a dedicated computer that is going to be used solely for music production etc. but

of course Logic is out of reach for everyone but Apple users these days.

Therefore this would be a great solution to this problem.

So i started reading websites, guides and FAQs to decide and get iDeneb v1.3 (Leopard 10.5.5) not being sure of what the actual difference it would make compared to Kalyway and i got going.

Reading stories about the OS still being very picky when it came to hardware i felt pretty confident since my second pc (the dedicated one for music production) had very common hardware, namely:

Motherboard: Asus P5B-Deluxe

CPU: Intel Core2Duo E6600 2,4 GHz

RAM: 2 x 1 GB OCZ Platinum DDR2 800MHz

Graphics Card: XFX Geforce 8600GT

Harddrive: Maxtor 200GB SATA (if possible, will be replaced by 2 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB in RAID1).

DVD-RW Drive: NEC ND-4550A

Power Supply: OCZ Silencer 420 Watt

So, i went on about installing and all went as smooth as silk.

I already had XP on there so i decided to resize the partition and my 'dualboot' config was going to look like this:

Partition 1: Windows (40GB)

Partition 2: Leopard (40GB)

Partition 3: Data (100GB)

I got through the iDeneb installer/setup with no issues at all. The Leopard partition was set to Mac-OS (Journaled),

and after installation the Dualboot config worked perfectly fine using the Darwin Bootloader.

Here comes the one crucial issue though; Leopard will not boot. :)

I will get a startup screen going with the 'loading cursor' in the middle of the screen but it will just keep on going and thats it. (After a few minutes it shows a sort of white cancel/error icon and thats it).

So i tried booting with the '-v' parameter and the terminal/log shows:

FireWire (OHCI) TI ID 8023 PCI now active. GUID 0011d8000109e354; max speed s400.
Still waiting for root device

What have i tried so far to solve this?

- Google Search / Searching these forums / Wiki.

I could not find anyone else that had the same hardware and the same issues.

Neither did other people's hints and tips solve mine.

- The Hardware compatibility list in the Wiki.

This shows, my motherboard should work fine except for onboard sound.

- I've tried disabling a lot of on-board devices one by one to see if it helped.

Disabled: USB, Firewire, Sound with no result unfortunatly.

- Changed the SATA mode from Enhanced to Compatible even followed by

a reinstall in Compatible mode, but no improvements here either.

I was hoping someone here with a little more experience regarding OSX86 on

this kind of hardware would be able to help me out?

Thanks in advance. :)

Hey Ness, I had similar issues with my ASUS board, and crazily enough,

you might just have to install an IDE harddisk on the Primary Master setting to get it to work

(doesn't have to have first boot priority!) .. but seriously, that's worked for a couple people...

Anyway,

Failing that, you might wanna look at this post, it worked for me, though I just changed MOBOs,

http://forum.insanelymac.com/lofiversion/i...hp/t135178.html

(switching the AppleGenericPCATA.kext , AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext and AppleNForceATA.kext drivers around post install)

Hope that's even a little helpful!

Goodluck man!

Hey,

Thanks for the tips. :(

If i try this however, i get a message saying 'No such file or directory'.

When i try to execute either;

- mv AppleGenericPCATA.kext ..

or

- mv AppleGenericPCATA.kext Extensions/

It will give me that message.

Is there a renaming command to use as an alternative maybe?

(renaming AppleGenericPCATA.kext to AppleGenericPCATA.bak might do the same trick i am guessing?).

Thanks for the help so far. :(

Being an Asus board, you won't be able to run dual cores without a hacked bios. Did you try booting with CPUS=1

I'd like to try but so far i have no luck getting the OS booted the way it should at all.

(Since it says Still waiting for root device).

Unless you are implying this is because of the OS not recognising the Dual Core Proc. ?

You type in the "cpus=1" at the darwin boot loader prompt. But, cpus=1 has nothing to do with the "still waiting for root device", that is a ide chipset error. When you installed iDeneb 1.3, did you select the "ichx fix" or something similar? I can't remember the exact name of the package, but it's something like that. You may have to re-install iDeneb. If your P5B has a Jmicron controller also, you need to select that too. It works silky smooth on my P5K D-Wifi. As for your bios, it's DSDT errors, which you can work around. Get yourself booting into leopard and i'll help you with those (My P5K-D doesn't have DSDT errors, I dunno if the P5B does, I'll check it out for you).

The second time i installed iDeneb i checked the various menu options for possible tools that would have something to do with the I/O controller drivers etc.

I did not see a thing such as ichfix...sounds like this is the exact issue though. (Loading the right drivers for using a SATA drive).

Could you explain me where exactly in the setup i go about activating this?

Thanks for all the help im getting so far guys! :)

Under "Chipset" Select "ICHx Fixed" and "JMicron ATA" The pic I updated shows the iDeneb 1.1 selection screen, but 1.3 is virtually the same, notice under "Chipset" the two items I mentioned, you need both! I looked up the P5B specs, and it does indeed have a JMircron chipset for the PATA/eSata ports. So you need to select both items in iDeneb. You also need to put your sata ports in AHCI mode in your bios. If you need any more help, let us know!

Going off the ideneb 1.3 thread, these are the items you want selected (nothing else!)

Drivers:

• Audio:

⁃ ADI1988

• Kernel:

⁃ Kernel Vanilla 9.5.0 is the the default kernel and isn't included in the Kernel List.

DO NOT SELECT A KERNEL, IT WILL INSTALL THE DEFAULT VANILLA KERNEL

Chipset:

• ICHx Fixed

• JMicronATA

- Wireless (If you have the wifi edition select or if you have a diff one, select from the list)

• RTL8187L

Fix: (I use the MacPro SMBIOS so my system profiler says I have a MacPro :-) )

-AppleSMBIOS-27-MP

Under video, you need to select;

NVidia:

• NVinject 0.2.1 per 128,256,320,512,640,768 Mb e 1Gb

SELECT ONLY THE ONE WITH THE AMOUNT OF MEMORY YOUR VIDEO CARD HAS

ie, if it's a 512MB 8600GT SELECT NVinject then the 512MB option

Applications -> Select any you want, you can install them later if you wish.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, the onboard ethernet should be picked up automagickly by OSX. No driver needed.

Hope this helps!!!

Wow! Thanks for all the replies again everyone! :)

After some searching, i found the window!

Its 'Customize', right after you select the partition.

I shall set it up this time and will let you know how things go! :)

One quick question on a sidenote:

Is the ASU (Update manager) modified so it will retreive updates for OSX86 machines?

I have read somewhere i should not except updates because i might lose desktop compatibility afterwards....

Hey,

An update on the current situation:

After installing i got the screen saying: " You need to restart your computer ".

After several reboots the message persisted so i went back to terminal mode.

Here i saw the message 'Package 0 didn't get an HPET'.

After some searching on this error, i read that these might be CPU errors so i did a few reinstalls trying to select fixes like 'CPU=1' and the 'AppleCPUPowermanagement fix'.

After installing with both of them, i still got the 'You need to restart your computer message'.

But after looking in terminal mode again, i noticed that the startup sequence is a lot longer then it was before.

I see tons of kext files getting loaded as well as Drivers, NVInject.

After that it seems to get a few more 'Package 0 didn't get an HPET' messages though and drop out of the startup sequence.

I took a picture of the messages it gives me now: Click!

Is there still something i am overlooking? :P

If i interpret it right myself there seems to be an error message there saying 'CPU(s) configured incorrectly'.

But since the CPU=1 fix is installed i do not know what else to try.

That is weird.... Actually if you take a close look at the error, it's related to the "AppleIntelCpuPowerManagement", which is a kext (loadable module). You need to go into single user mode and delete that kext. If you need help with that, let us know, I or someone else can help you. There are some tutorials here that you can print out before diving in.

EDIT: Thinking about it, try reinstalling (making sure you format the partition first) and only select the ichx fixed and jmicron and the nvinject files. Then let me know where it stops if your not able to boot. You don't need to select the cpus=1 fix. You can do that at boot time (hit a key and type cpus=1 at the darwin prompt), it's a bit of a pain to get rid of that "fix". Also, go in your bios and if the HPET is enabled, disable it, or if it's disabled, enable it.

That did the trick!

I booted right into Leopard this time! :)

So i guess this means either the soundcard or wireless driver is messing up the party.....

Not being able to use onboard sound wouldn't be an issue though since its a DAW machine and i will have a TC Electronics Desktop Konnekt 6 (Firewire Audio Interface) arriving, hopefully next week.

I'm a total n00b to MacOS...but is there any benchmark i can run to see if the performance is alright. (So i'm sure i'm not lacking any necessary drivers....)

Thanks for all your patience!

Right on! Glad you got it working. If you like, I would suggest to brush up on some tutorials on single user mode. You can install the audio kext and if it blows up again, go in single user mode and remove the kext to fix it. Remember tho, anytime you add/subtract/change kexts, the next reboot use "-f -v" to flush the kext cache and to see the boot process in verbose mode to make sure everything is ok. Or if you just want to wait for your firewire audio, that would work too (it might even be better than the onboard). The same for the wifi. But either way, I would suggest alot of reading on these forums to get familar with OSX and single user mode/terminal mode (if you have linux experience, that's a huge plus, since OSX is BSD at the core). You can always PM me for any questions!

EDIT: I have the newer version of Taurga's installer for the audio, PM me and I can email or AIM it to you. Also, check out XBench. All tests selected minus the disk, I get 222.46.

Yeah, i guess its back to reading for me then. :)

The only experience i have with linux is some fiddling around in (K)Ubuntu.

I guess i'll just hold off the audio drivers until the Konnekt6 arrives.

Thanks for all the help though!

Now i finally have the chance of gaining experience on MacOSX. :)

I just installed iDeneb 10.5.5 and in order to prevent random freezes and kernel panics I had to use the cpu=1 fix. Is there any reliable way around this? I see you mentioned an "ichx fix" or something. Any help would be appreciated, I don't really want to run on one core. Thanks

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi everyone,

I figured i'd continue posting on in this thread....

I came around adding the 2, 500GB drives to my DAW and did a reinstall of Windows XP.

All was smooth sailing of course, until it was time to install OSX86 again... :(

I does not seem to recognise the RAID array at all, instead it shows both drives with unaccesable partitions...

I started searching the forums to see if anyone had a solution for this, but all the messages i read after that we're starting to convince me otherwise.

So i read somewhere here on the forums it should be possible to switch the RAID array to AHCI or IDE mode in the BIOS (technically this meant temporarily releaving the array) and then run the OSX86 setup to install on one of the 2 drives and boot the drives afterwards.

So far i have not been able to get this to work at all, not even when i pull the cable from one of the 2 drives and switch to AHCI or IDE controller mode in the BIOS.

(I have 80 GB of unallocated space on the drive, but the iDeneb installer will not sucessfully erase/repartition the space to a HFS volume).

I was wondering if there we're any other alternatives that i could try?

I would really like to keep the RAID array since its a RAID1 array for safety reasons and not a RAID0 array for a little more performance.

Any suggestions? :P

Ok,

So i talked to some people on mIRC....they explained me RAID was pretty much impossible to do with an onboard Intel ICH8R controller.

So i decided to go for my best alternative.

I installed a third HDD in the rig. (Actually its the one that was in the machine before i put the 2x500GB RAID1 array in).

Now i copied the chain0 file again and added the command line for the Windows bootloader.

All is booting up properly...but as soon as Leopard starts loading i get an error message...

I made a picture of the error message in terminal mode: Click

Just to clarify, the current situation is as follows:

- Asus P5B Deluxe, with the SATA controller in RAID mode.

- 2 x 500GB Western Digital Caviar Green Power in SATA Port 1 and 2 set to RAID 1 mode.

- 1 x Maxtor Diamondmax 200GB SATA drive on SATA Port 3.

- Windows XP installed on the RAID1 array (and the Chain0 file on the root of the drive).

It looks like OSX86 has trouble starting up because the Controller mode changed?

Will this be solved by reinstalling? Or is there an easier way?

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

Hi

I have the same mobo P5B Deluxe

it works perfectly with raid 0

try to use FireWire Remove fix when installing os, it helped me a lot (=

Well...there was no way to get it to work at all.

So i decided to take a PATA drive and put it on the jMicron controller as a last resort.

This worked! :(

Now all i have to figure out if there is a way to adress the data on the RAID1 array when i am in Leopard. :D
