Ok well i am going to buy a retail version of OSX however it seems like there are 2 different versions.

These are the versions I found

Apple Mac - iMac Mac OS X 10.5.2 Leopard

What's in the box:

1) iMac Mac OS X Install Disc 1 (Mac OS version 10.5.2)

2) iMac Mac OS X Install Disc 2

3) Apple Stickers

4) Software license documents

5) Slide box for contents

UPDATED IMPORTANT INFO: This disc will NOT work on anything older than a current aluminum imac, it will NOT work on the old white plastic model, or anything older then that.

*****This disc is made for the Imac8,1 model. You can check your current Imac model by performing this function under Terminal;

sysctl hw.model

Apple Mac - MacBook Mac OS X 10.5.2 Leopard.

What's in the box:

1) MacBook Mac OS X Install Disc 1 (Mac OS version 10.5.2)

2) Mac OS X Install Disc 2

3) Everything Mac guide book

4) Software license documents

5) Apple stickers

6) Screen wipe cloth

UPDATED INFO: This disc will NOT work on a Powerbook (i.e. PowerPC machine).

*****This disc is made for the macbook4,1 model. You can check your current Imac model by performing this function under Terminal;

sysctl hw.model

Which version do I need. The iMac or the Macbook or does it not matter?

I think that you need Leopard retail DVD *only* not iMac or MacBook one because this won't be installed on their macs. if you tried this on PC you'll get a message saying that you cannot install on this mac as I remember the message.
