This place does have a wealth of knowledge. The searching here is decent, but Google is your friend. Your story is close to home.

 

....as of right now my OSX86 trumps my vista Ultimate in performance. I use it for design. I cant beat the colors either.

 

I like MS, I am not a fan boy for either side. I think there is room for both.

I envy the fact you got an early start on your computer hands on experience.

 

However I do smile that you removed OS/2 since it was already better back then than Windows 95.

 

OS/2 back then was superior to just about any other x86 32 bit system. - It simply worked and really did a better DOS and Windows 3.x than the originals natively. As for MS DOS vs PC DOS...hmmm, the latter was also a better DOS in its final incarnation.

 

I left the Windows world for the most part when Vista came out. Had enough of the bloated MS way of doing business. Now I can enjoy a better OS with Mac but with IBM strings attached (namely their OS on THEIR box). Apple is the new Henry Ford - You can have any colour you want as long as it is black.

 

When Hackintosh approaches a true fully working system, with no obtuse fixes as upgrade to OSX comes out I may venture into that realm.

That story was a true work of art! I'm sure that it'll inspire people to build their own hackintosh or install OS X or OS 9 on their PC. Your story seems somewhat similar to what I'm doing. I'm pretty new to OSx86, I'm having some problems getting everything to work, but I'm using Intel, not AMD. Anyway, nice first post!

Great read, interesting history. We all have our own stories that have lead us to the OSx86 community, and I bet there are many similar stories among us. It was very nice to see something like this on the front page, much more refreshing than some of the threads that clog up the forums. This is a large community and the ones that have helped to make it what it is today do deserve a round of applause. There is a multitude of information at your fingertips here, and I, much like Astronomy, didn't even post until I had my Hack at least operational. My Sony Vaio TZ-150 wasn't exactly a prime candidate, but by doing the research and reading through the forums, it all fell in place. Google was great, but it lead me back here time and time again.

 

I couldn't agree with you more however on the quick answers...so many people want their OSx86 right now...without any research on their part...without any hiccups...without any problems...and they simply can't be bothered to search for the answers on their own. They are all here, they have been asked/answered multiple times...take the time to find them, and don't give up so easily if you run into problems. This is a hobby for most...and like most hobbies, it is more rewarding in the end when you are able to solve these problems though hard work and perseverance...which is exactly what this community and its members have shown throughout the year.

i started to have an experience on apple machine very very long time ago. my dad used to own an apple computer (apple II if i remember it correctly), which as far as i can remember used to play games only. lol, i still remember playing bugs bunny on that machine every single day during my childhood.

 

then in early 90's, my dad bought a brand new 286 IMB compatible pc. that was the day i started to walk away from apple, and opting for pc for which i thought far superior than the old apple (oh yes, i was comparing it with the machine which was built more than 10 years prior, what a mistake . well i'm just a kid )

 

from that day (till end of 90's), i've been using tones of PCs which were operated by namely DOS (floppy), DOS 6 (on 20mb hdd), Window3.1, Windows 95, 98, and ME. i got my 1st taste of a custom built pc with pentium 233mmx (overclocked to 266 mhz)+with 1 gb of hdd (yeah it's a quantum bigfoot drive). it was installed with pirated 98 and ME (yes, dual booting using boot magic). it runs smoothly, till 1 day when i was using it to write my final semester thesis when it failed to boot into neither os, which really frustrated and pissed me off. i almost cried to think that i've to start writing my thesis all over again. sigh. i was lucky that there was another computer in my house, which i use to plugged my hdd and pull my files from it. i was later learned that the hdd was severely infected by numerous of viruses. yeah i know, since my day with 3.1 and latter ms OSes, viruses are always the problem, and i should've learned and should've make a backup which apparently that i didnt.

 

shorting the story i began to look for an alternative OS. and after days of research and readings, i came across linux and with knowledge that it is compatible with pc (or better say was developed for PC) and far more important its free. and with zero knowledge, i purchased a Red Hat 6.1 and attempted to install it to my pc. my 1st installation was a fiasco, totally wiped off my entire ms win98 and the linux installation itself was far from success. after dozens of attempts, i finally took the hdd out, in order to reformat it using partition magic from a different machine with intent to re-install win98 and give-up the red hat for good. when i was playing with the partition magic, i noticed the Primary Partition and Set Active options, which gave me an idea to give it another go. and to my surprise, the installation went well, rebooted and booted into lilo, and after millions of lines telling what it is doing, and finally stopped at login screen. logged in, and nothing happen. wait and wait still nothing happen. what the heck. i then using the other computer to look for solution from internet, remember there was no google stuff by that time, and looking for some simple sort of information were really pain in the ass. and finally from irc, i found bunch of people that were very helpful. i then managed to get the GUI started, and learned how to get all the peripherals to work. and for the next 6 month or so, i'm very happy with my red hat setup (although the the GUI was glitchy here and there but it was really a success in term of achieving my goal to find an alternative OS).

 

 

when i finished my study, and got into working environment, i once again have been 'forced' to work in windows environment. yeah, there is no regulation to say that i've to work in windows, but when everything around are setup for windows, i dont have any other choice. but i've to admit that XP isn't that bad compared to its predecessors (except for NT5.0/Win2K for sure). the improvement of its gui, and the fact it was based on NT kernel give me a confidence to once again believe in ms OS. everything is good in early years of XP, with less viruses penetrations and good support from ms by providing updates from date to date plus majority of software were built for ms platform, have kept me with XP for several years. but that good feeling finally came to an ending when in few years back all kind of trojans, worms spywares and those starts to hit XP heavily and severely again. no single antivirus nor single antispyware is good enough to take care of everything. there are always a necessity to have more than antivirus or antispyware running to keep the computer clean, which at will the end compromise the system performance. with that i start to set-up my XP to non standard style, working as Power User for daily activities and relied heavily on Run As command for administrative tasks. it worked well at first, until my network card failed to work correctly. i cant set up my NIC (IP, netmask and such infos) from GUI anymore. the only way to change the IP is by using MS DOS netsh command. changing to new NICs also gave me the same error. system re-installation seems the only way to solve the problem. and it did. but it will happen again no time, again and again. and it also happen to my computer at home (with the usage of power user too - i dont know if it got anything to do with Power User usage or not, but things that happened suggested me just that). but, still with or without problems i still have to depend on XP as there is no much choice. yeah, there r few SGI irix 6.5 at my workplace, but hell the interface r ugly and no support at all from SGI kept me away from those multi thousands dollar machines. Solaris 10 is also a no go for me. its just ugly. Linux might be the best bet, but few things kept me from using it solely. 1st, linux is too technical. playing with hardwares and softwares in linux isnt as easy as in windows. 2nd, windows equivalent softwares are little harder to find or not exist at all. yes, wine is a good program, but not all software will work with it. 3rd, for nothing, it seems my passions towards linux has decreased over the years. maybe its the time to consider it back since newer linux distros like Ubuntu and Knoppix are said to be very good and reliable, but that was about the time when i have the 1st experience to use macosx (tiger) on PPC which i fell in love at the first sight. really, my 1st experience on macosx was really enjoyable and i was surprised that i didnt once b4 take a consideration to go for a mac although it has been in the market for years despite problems i faced when working in problematic windows environment.

 

i toying around with the ppc for a while and it was very impressive moments. but the ppcs at my workplace is not available all the time as they were purchased for public use (for doing biology analysis and stuff). i suddenly remembered i've once heard/read somewhere about macosx that can run on intel pc (well, i was really skeptical when 1st time heard bout the such and doubted it will ever work) and began too look at a russian site where i know lottof 'black-market' stuff available for download. yay, they got it. 2 versions - 1 is tiger (which i dont remember which distro) and Kalyway 10.5.1 Leopard. 1 opted for tiger for 2 reasons - smaller size (which is more possible to download using rapidshare free account), and also for the reason that i've experience tiger and i liked it so much so why wouldn't i need leopard instead? so downloaded it installed it for the 1st time on Dell Optiplex GX620, and it was successfull installed on the 1st attempt. wow that was really a surprise to me. but sadly the performance way lower than my expectation. i get all things working (with tutorials from this community forum of course), but my display isnt as smooth as the 1 i experience on the ppc. that put me off a bit and i thought it was about my hardwares arent fully supported and its maybe the end of it. i then back to my linux and win xp and only booted into the macosx once a while.

 

after a while (yeah yeah my xp pissed me off again), i start to take things seriously. i dug around the insanelymac forum a little bit further and found alot more useful stuff than b4. with bunch of info, i then downloaded the Kalyway 10.5.1 Leopard and attempted the installation. this time, rather than selecting all options available on installation cd blindly like i did with the tiger, i carefully choose which options more appropriate to my system. installation went well, reboot, and everything worked out of the box. my display working perfectly, my ethernet is working and everything is wonderful. man oh man, i was so happy. and rite now my 10.5.1 Kalyway is running superbly from when it is 1st installed 6 months ago, and it is now my main os and only booted into xp once in a while, and using only boot camp to accomplish that.

 

and bout a month and half ago, i started my project to get the leopard running on my custom AMD machine (for home use). and from the readings i know i can be done. With the same kalyway installation cd, i tried to install it on my AMD. no success. the installation stuck with "still waiting for root device". ermm i wasnt sure if the installation dvd i have will also work for AMD. i then looked back to where i got my tiger and kalyway 10.5.1 installer. this*--*-* time i found more of it, ie Leo4Allv3, Kalyway 10.5.2, and iDeneb 10.5.5. and for the metter, i bought a rapidshare premium account and managed to download those all those 3 at ease. but still, the still "waiting for root device" persists. then i started to play around with my cmos, no luck either. no matter anything i do with the cmos, there's still no luck. but i'm yet to give up. i'm kinda obsessed with macosx, and took thing a little bit riskier this time. cmos flashing. i knew it is very risky, and i've never done any cmos upgrade b4, but yeah i'm obsessed and need it to work badly, by hook or by crook. i then went to MSI website, looking for cmos upgrade/flash utility. yup it is available through windows online flashing tool online. i dont look back and start to flash rite away, and at 80% an error sign occured, with msg "Flashing failed". done it 3x with the same result. finally rebooted too see what if that helps in any way. nah, my mainboard was not functioning at all anymore. nothing is working and nothing is detected. no cmos options no nothing. only 1 thing that worked at that time which is floppy disk - indicated that the flashing has failed and left me with no way to recover it since no offline flashing tool available for my board. what a mess i put myself into.

 

i tried to look for the offline flashing tool for my bios for 2 days with no success. i was almost given-up any kind of hope by that time. and brand new board seems the only way to work around. but its kinda hard to find any good & cheap micro AM2 board at my place and more importantly, will it work with macosx installation? at the very last moment, instead of searching using board model no, i use the southbridge and northbridge series to see if there any board shares the same chipsets with mine and to see if it helps in any way. to my surprise, i found 1 board with so much similarities with my board - same south & north bridges and with identical peripherals - and it has the offline flasher tool. flashed my board with the tool, yay it worked and my computer up and working again. in windows xp it shows some misconfigured setting, but that settled with driver updates.

 

now the macosx installation started right after my board recovery, but the "Still waiting for the root device" dont seem to be solved at any way. finally i changed my SATA hdd to 20gig of PATA with single IDE cable with the optical drive, and hell the installation screen started (using Leo4Allv3). i was so happy at this time. the installation seemed fine, until it restarted to where it suppose to bring me to account setup and stuff, when the problem of "Still waiting for root device" came back. damn it. i then tried to install using kalyway 10.5.2 and iDeneb 10.5.5, but the problem getting worsen as the post installation will definitely give me endless loop (restarting endlessly). i changed the HDD to another 80gb of PATA, which gave me just the same result. in total, the installation attempts i've done were already +/- 100 times. i believe most ppl will simply give up at this time. but that isnt my attitute. so, i then tried to install it on another 80gb PATA (4th HDD) and it worked this time. (i later learned that the 1st 2 PATA hdd were faulty - geez). only god knows how i felt when the 1st time the macosx up and running on my AMD machine. no words can define that feelings, really. however, the process is yet to be over. i now struggled to get my ATI x550 to work at desired display resolution. this is the time when i learnt so much thing about extensions - the way to play arount it, and the way to recover if anything goes wrong. in another sense, it is much better to do it in the hardest way coz u can learn so much thing u know - rather than easy setup where u wont learn anything at all.

 

so back to my graphics card setup. i used all kind of injectors available, the closest i get was with the Callisto. but still no QE/CI enabled with that. i then re-installs the macosx using different distro to see if it helps, but no luck still. i then changed the display card to X1300 and with natitx1300, it should have worked, but apperently it didnt. did all the reinstallations again and again with no improvement at all. and sadly enuff, i read somewhere on insanelymac that my card id isnt supported (from numbers of working x1300 id, mine fell into the ones that are not supported - how unlucky is that isnt it).

 

a friend of mine once asked me, after all this hard-work what is the point i want to prove. my answer is simple. it between nothing and everything. nothing to them, everything to me. and same goes to the QE/CI, without it, macosx is very much nothing and useless. and yesterday, on my pay day, i got myself a brand new ASUS 8500GT (although it is way outdated - but who cares ) and for the 1st time, the QE/CI are seen in my system profiler and i was able to run programs required those such as VLC and Toast Titanium 9. i was a very very very happy macosx user rite now.

 

 

i must thanks to all those ppl that have dedicated their lives to work on this so called hackintosh/macosx project. without those efforts, all these wouldnt be possible at all. i also must thank insanelymac.com for being such a great forums and discussions hoster where everything i need is just the matter of a search button. thanks u very very much all. thank u, thank u, thank u

Hi Astronomy - thanks for your story about how you got here and to Liquidx too.

 

My story is a bit different. I started with computers when you had to go into a room and use a machine to punch the holes in your cards that carried the program and data. Then you bowed and handed them to the High Priest who eventually fed them into the computer. A couple of days later you'd get back reams of wide paper - and that was just the errors!

 

I started hacking machine code on the original Apple II then on CP/M and MS-DOS systems and on Minix (the forerunner of Linux). Minix was fun because you could have a Unix computer running from a single 360 kb floppy disk on a PC with 64kb of memory (yes, that's kilobytes!).

 

But it's almost 20 years since I got down to a level where you can feel the bits between your toes. Now I develop data-based websites.

 

I downloaded 3 different OSX86s - Kalyway, iATKOS and Leo4all. After frustrating days of swapping out my DVD burners, moving jumpers, changing cables I could never get past the dreaded "Still waiting for root device". Then yesterday I woke up with a brainwave - use a friend's Dell laptop to install on to a USB 80Gb hard drive I had. iATKOS and Leo4all wouldn't start - but Kalyway did! And a hour or so later I had a drive with Kalyway that would boot my desktop system! Funnily enough, it won't boot the laptop I made it on!!

 

So. The single menu bar takes a LOT of getting used to. Audio doesn't work yet; it doesn't see my DVD drives; my ethernet came up straight away; my webcam doesn't work; my printer does but I can't find a driver that suits it better; my scanner shows up but doesn't scan; most other stuff seems to work.

 

Would I buy a real Mac? No. This computer is over 6 years old. During that time I've changed motherboards (twice), graphics cards (twice), changed the power supply and added heaps of storage - I now have about 2Tb online (I'm paranoid about backups!). Imagine the cost of replacing all that lot with a real Mac!

 

The other thing is I have LOTS of software I use as a developer. Replacing all that for a Mac platform would cost thousands. Plus I also develop mostly for MS IIS systems (hey, I don't buy the equipment - I just work with what the client has!) and I can test in the native Vista (sorry folks - that's what I use!). I know I could use Boot Camp or Parallels but in my experience, emulations never get everything quite right.

 

So here I am with a faux Mac and installing drivers etc is going to give me a bit of entertainment!

I've read all of the posts here since writing. You all have great stories and I love reading that I'm not the only stubborn person who just wouldn't quit after seeing the "Still Waiting for Root Device" message over 25 times in one night (some install DVD's load up the extensions first, rather than using a cache file and it takes significantly longer on those, unfortunately for me, LawlessPPC 10.5.4 is one of those, and one of the only ones which has support for my particular hdd controller).

 

I presently have been using the Voodoo_beta2 kernel for quite some time and love how well it runs. I get a crash every now and then (usually a kernel panic relating to some program I was trying to run... once it was on a user-switch while firefox (in my user, the gf was on her's at the time) was self-updating). My average uptime is around 10days (it's hard to get past that as I usually have to reboot for some reason more often than that, especially since I try out new stuff often).

 

As you all may know, the brand new Voodoo kernel (XNU 9.5.0 RC1 with on-the-fly opcode patching) was released yesterday. I am very excited to explore the improvements of having 64bit AMD working, as well as on-the-fly patching of CPUID's. I have been running it on my primary and my test OSX installations tonight and havn't had a crash yet. They strongly recommend upgrading to 10.5.5 to use the kernel so I've been tackling that subject and I managed to screw myself on my test drive (didn't do the while sleep 1 ; do rm -rf /S/L/E/AppleIntelCPU....kext, received a phat kernel-panic when the updater loaded that kext at around 47%, leaving my test drive non-functional). I tried a couple methods of recovery (basically removing that .kext via a different installation and repairing permissions, also removing nvinject.kext b/c it has issues with 10.5.5, then booting with -x -v -f to try to get in, but I couldn't get the desktop, menubar, or dock to load so I was pretty much SOL).

 

I'm too afraid to be back at square 1 (though I've become rather quick at installing osx, I even got it installed on my brother's computer which has entirely different hardware than mine...) so I refuse to just charge in and update my primary install. I'm using Disk-Utility's RESTORE feature to duplicate my presently working install. In about an hour I'll be booting to that to try the update feature again (this time not making such an obvious mistake). My hopes are that the on-the-fly patcher works properly (using Zephyroth's new AMD Patcher 0.3 did not work for me, but I'm still learning... slowly...) and I'm as lucky as the other users who were to upgrade to 10.5.5 using a vanilla updater.

 

I can't think of any other problems I'm having... through the use of this site's search feature (and occasionally google) I've been able to overcome every single obstacle that's been thrown before me. I'm very excited for 10.6, very excited!

Are you sure you are not saying my history? I had the same exact history, down to the ppl who I sold the computer to and co-worker that showed me MacOS. I sold to my fathers boss' dauther too lol!

 

Only diferences are :

- i got a 233 pentium 2 (not a 300mhz)

- my pc had a 300mb hard drive not 4GB

- my seniors year pc as Athlon XP 2200+ not Athlon XP 2100+

- only had 1 destro of Fedora (some friends were playing freesbie with Ubuntu CDs because someguy at my school ordered like 200, u know, for free xD)

- Part-time doing data-entry was at my brother's not my father's .

- Still dont have a MacOSx =(

 

 

Even your rig is the same as mine, except my card is BFGNVidia 7800GT 256mb

 

When I used Kalway install my Gigabyte board's network card was the only thing not working (if i remember correctly, so had no internet), the AMD patch worked great!

That's hardcore! I'm on an N'Vidia 8800GTS now (and loving it btw...). I havn't booted my computer into windows in nearly 2 months. I am incredibly proud of that. I hope your luck turns around for you. I'll tell you how I got my internet working but it's completely noob. I had none on my first 3 or 4 attempts at OSX install (usb netgear wireless=fail on any OS so that didn't work) so I was bouncing into Windows to research and I was going to attempt something new, had it all written down in my notebook... then when booting back into OSX I realized that I failed something and ruined it so I reinstalled and just checked every box available for internet on the LawlessPPC 10.5.4 disk and the internet just worked out of the box.

 

My brother's computer had an N'Vidia ethernet controller (it took me, I kid you not, 6 hours to figure out how to make his internet work... the kext that worked had to be manually edited to include his chip's id... realtec 2199 or something, I vaguely remember using a flashlight to read it off of the MB... that modified kext is saved on like 4 disks just incase he wrecks his mac rig).

 

DON'T GIVE UP on osx... it's worth it, and might I add: Voodoo (XNU) 9.5.0 RC1 Kernel is FANTASTIC! I havn't updated to 10.5.5 yet on my primary install (ruined my secondary install by being completely noob and not interrupting the installation and loading of AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext... I couldn't recover so I dumped the install and still havn't updated my primary install yet.

 

Only other issue I'm having is Toast Titanium won't run... hasn't run more than once in my osx86 experience... I've given up and gone onto other methods of burning. Oh, and while playing wow, I fullscreen my primary monitor and when hitting hte top edge quickly and then entering the second screen I sometimes get a hard freeze (no panic, I use debug=0x100 every single boot...)... It happens like once a week and I play wow everyday so I consider it minimal and from where I'm sitting, impossible to troubleshoot since I cannot replicate it.

 

HAHA just reread your post, saw the warlock comment... I hit 80 the weekend it came out... on my warlock, on osx lol! Minarets on Deathwing (US), things won't drop for me, but i got 25man T7 shoulds and 10man T7 Helm 7 badges away from the 10man T7 Robes... headed back into 25m Naxx tonight hopefully... fun instance, cleared on regular but my guild's tanks were getting oneshot by hatefuls on Patchwerk and on Razuveus the priests couldn't figure out how to MC properly, but the other 2 wings we cleared the first night we went (with 6 puggers no less). Oh and Ventrilo just released an update allowing us mac users to tweak people's volumes (finally... pc's had it forever).

It happens like once a week and I play wow everyday so I consider it minimal and from where I'm sitting, impossible to troubleshoot since I cannot replicate it.

 

HAHA just reread your post, saw the warlock comment... I hit 80 the weekend it came out... on my warlock, on osx lol! Minarets on Deathwing (US), things won't drop for me, but i got 25man T7 shoulds and 10man T7 Helm 7 badges away from the 10man T7 Robes... headed back into 25m Naxx tonight hopefully... fun instance, cleared on regular but my guild's tanks were getting oneshot by hatefuls on Patchwerk and on Razuveus the priests couldn't figure out how to MC properly, but the other 2 wings we cleared the first night we went (with 6 puggers no less). Oh and Ventrilo just released an update allowing us mac users to tweak people's volumes (finally... pc's had it forever).

 

Just got my Mac os X install working, mon!

 

iDeneb 10.5.5, internet works, WoW works! Its amazing, havent been to Windows all day xD only problem atm is, i have no sound =( my onboard sound is SoundBlaster Live! and... my pci card that i have stored on a box is, beleave it or not SoundBlaster Live! too, theres some drivers but they dont work, dont know why, on IRC some guys helped me all day long, booting Ubuntu to get codecs list, doing some commands on boot and on console, but nothing works =(

Even one guy sayed to me SB Live! will never be supported and told me to go buy a 10$ USB sound card, ha! (found on ebay for 1$).

 

But, if i order it, and it ever arraives, it will take at least 14 days (that what it says), kinda pissed at it, because WoW actually seems to run better on Mac and the UI doesnt disapear if i check map while in combat.

 

I am not 80 yet cause i gave up on lvling the first week because there was like 200 ppl doing same quest as me plus another 50 pvping with the enemy, the floor was all full of skeletons and corpses xD (my chars are Silentw, Sphix, Sphox, Icethunder and Eyehawk on Grim Batol (EU horde), and Sphix and Fraxis on Ahn'Quiraj(eu ally)).

 

PS: if u try iDeneb WoW wont load because it needs some emulator, search the net, install it and it will work just great =)

Your wow won't work without emulation? Are you talking about WINE (or Darwine, aka CodeWeavers Crossover Mac)... I went to best buy and picked up a $1.50 trial DVD to install fresh with. When I switched to mac I intended on it being permanent so I invested nearly 5-6hrs of my time downloading the updates one by one.

 

I'm waiting to try a new LawlessPPC, hopefully he makes a new one for 10.5.5 with the new kernel (I know he uses a Phenom and that's the processor I'm upgrading to... his MoBo is similar to mine so he will always include support for my disc controllers, I had some problems with iDeneb and the 'still waiting for root device' message)

What I mean on the PS is that WoW installer (from DVD) wont run unless you fix that emulator thingy, other than that, WoW natively runs on Mac os =)

Well.. i first heard about OS X running on PC with the help of PearPC.. it was a humoungous download and i didn't dared to do so... in the second year of my engineering, i convinced one of my seniors to get a Macbook for himself.. he got it.. and man.. i fell in love with the OS X.. then i downloaded the Tiger's image and installed it on my system.. firstly it didn't detected my HDD.. i changed the settings in the BIOS and made it to AHCI.. and then it detected it and got installed.. but it was too slow.. I've an AMD 4400+ X2 processor with SB600 chipset.. then i downloaded and installed 10.5.1.. it worked but in the same way as the AHCI settings were done in Tiger.. but there were no graphic effects.. the resolution was also stuck at 1024x768.. then i got this new NVIDIA 8600 GT card and installed the NVinstaller package.. after that.. its a hell of a ride..

I put OSX on my old data drive and kept my vista64 on the front drive. I think everything looks allright mind you I never even touched a mac before let alone used one before.
