ASUS Z83V

Desc: The Laptop Shell, has many various specs:

NBK-ASU-Z83V_G2.jpgNBK-ASU-Z83V_G4.jpgNBK-ASU-Z83V_G1.jpg

CPU: Intel® Pentium® M processor 700 Sequence

Display: 17" WSXGA+ Color Shine LCD

Graphic: ATI Mobility™ Radeon™ X700 128MB

Memory: DDR2 533MHz, up to 2G

Chipset: Mobile Intel® 915PM Express Chipset

Interface: 1x 1.3M web-cam, 1 x S/PDIF, 5 x USB ports, 1x TV-Out, Bluetooth™

Dimension & Weight: 405x309x30-34mm , 3.9Kg

This Motherboard component seems to have all of the compatible items that are associated with Asus, so it looks like the best canidate. The x700 is now supported, so that clears that one up, and Azalia sound is supported. As for the network card I don't know. I can't find the specific chipset of what it is. That's the only iffy thing, but I can add the wireless card, so it's not like a show stopper.

Not too bad really... I figured it would be that much. Standby for updates!

Installation:

The Packages arrived and I was amazed at all the little features of this great system. Asus makes one hell of a little model. It took about 1 night in total to get all the functions working correctly, but it was rather easy overall. I decided to make a small how to, with my notes and suggestions of course.

Above: As you can see there are many parts that ARE NOT included in the barebones kit from Asus. The one component it did come with was the tuner card built in, but it required the Hard drive, memory, processor and Wifi card. I loved this because I could customize the entire system.

IMG_4876.jpg

Above: NOTE!!!!!! There are Two Mini-PCI slots inside, one for the tuner, the other for wireless internet. I ended up switching the two slots in order for the wireless internet card to function correctly. The internet would come up only slightly from OSX and very slow at that and not at all in windows. After switching the slots it worked great. This was not a problem with the IBM wireless network card I tried, but that card WOULD not work in windows due to IBM hardware restrictions. I moved the two antenna cables underneith so that the panel would not sit on them when it was closed. This was a little difficult to do, but it was possible. The TV Tuner card is an AverTv Model, and works in either slot.

IMG_4877.jpg

Above: This is the Processor panel. I installed the memory without any problems of course, and then removed the heatsink and the fans rather easily as well. It's pretty self-explanitory. Place the processor in, turn the latch with a flathead and that's it. Reatach heatsink and screw the screws in the order of the numbers (So that it's equal pressure). The heat sink has thermal past already applied and has a tab that is pulled to make it fresh for bonding for the first time. As for the GPU it was already set in place and ready to go. You can see it there on the right.

Above: Installing the Os's was quite easy for Dual boot. Here were my steps.

1. Boot up OSX installer (10.4.5 Dvd Install) and create 2 partitions, 1 OSX Journaled, 1 MSDOS.

2. Continue Installation of OSX - (This may be weird, but this is the 1st time you have to install it....)

3. Boot up WinXp installer (I used Windows Media Center Edition 2005)

4. Install onto MSDOS partition, format to NTFS fast....

5. Complete Installation and boot into OSX Installer again.

6. Erase OSX Partition, and install OSX again. This will allow the darwin loader to function correctly and move the NTFS loader to a secondary function. It may sound weird, but it works. I tried other tutorial settings, and this is the only one that worked for me.

7. Reboot and you will see the glorious above screen (After you hit F8 of course)

Above: Isn't it cute?

IMG_4886.jpg

Above: Blue Tooth, and Wireless work natively. You see the lack of the battery status? That is because the powermanagement has not been fixed correctly to work with 10.4.5 yet. You can do the powermanagement fix if you like, but the point of the matter is that the SpeedStep on the intel processor will not function correctly. In other words:

*********This Laptop (until a fix arrives) will boot and run VERY slow if it boots while connected to only a battery******* If it boots on a power supply and is disconnected it will continue to run the speed it should. *****

I know that sucks, but that is the one downfall to this laptop, and many others with 10.4.5. You cannot turn off speedstep in the bios of this laptop. Just FYI...

Interestingly enough this camera is detected as a USB 2.0 Camera, but I don't know any drivers that will support it yet. I have looked online, but nothing seems to work yet. Here is the misc info on it:

USB2.0 Camera:

Version: 1.00

Bus Power (mA): 500

Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec

Product ID: 0x5602

Vendor ID: 0x0402

Also in order for the graphics to work correctly you must use the patch found here:

http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?sh...c=10415&hl=x700

After editing the boot.plist I was able to get a max res of 1152x864. Not too bad, but it could be better. Anyone with any better res, just be sure to let me know :P

Here is a little Quicksheet for FAQs

Is there any dongle or terminator required for QE and CI to work?

This concludes... for now the Asus Z83V (
:)
review and installation. For those out there who follow the video editing portion of my ambitions, both Final Cut Pro and Avid both work on the same laptop!

It has such a great screen, with great sound and built in features like a TV Tuner! (PC Only for now) iTv doesn't work, just FYI...

Hope that helps!

Very thorough write up of your setup and exactly what we need to hear more of. Congratulations on your rig and thanks for sharing the info with us. I wish more people would post topics similar to this instead of sensless banter.

Since you seem to have done your research, would you know if there are other units other than Asus that might also have a favorable compatibility with OSX?

Nice write-up kc. I'm waiting for the new processors to mature and weigh my option at the end of the year. I'm a speed freak and I always side for faster memory and bus speed. Lets hope maxxuss continues the Mac attack for our sake. None the less you have a nice piece of machine.

For Battery, try X-Battery. doesn't warn you of low battery though. But, nice little icon on the dock.

For me on Inspiron 6000, everything is fine except widescreen.

FYI: Widescreen works perfectly on Intel GMAs.

I have X-battery running, but the SpeedStep function is still a major problem... And yeah I agree core duo would have been nice, but I couldn't find one with ATI built in except for the super expensive x1600 ones, and that was nearing double my costs without the 7200rpm fatures and the ram and such.

Check out the Latitude D600

gigabit ethernet supported w/ kext on this board

Yeah um... thanks but as you can see I already have one.. soooo yeah. Not exactly the right place for advertising...
