With the stick in, go into the System Profiler (Quickest way to get there is to click on the Apple menu --> About this Mac -->More Info button), and click on USB. Find your stick in the device list of the USB panel. What does the speed section say?

I have exactly the same problem...

Systemprofiler shows the following:

USB-hogesnelheidsbus:

 Location hostcontroller:	Expension slot
 Besturingsbestand hostcontroller:	AppleUSBEHCI
 PCI-apparaatcode:	0x293a
 PCI-revisiecode:	0x0002
 PCI-fabrikantcode:	0x8086
 Busnummer:	0xfd

USB Storage:

 Versie:	96.02
 Busvoeding (mA):	500
 Snelheid:	Maximaal 480 Mb/sec
 Productcode:	0x070e
 Serienummer:	000000009602
 Fabrikantcode:	0x05e3

Sorry, im Dutch, so all info is in Dutch too xD. But everything is like it should be.. I guess it has something to do with incompatible AppleUSBEHCI, maybe i'll try using some older versions of it.

Running 10.5.4 now, nothing modified except audio & PS2 driver.

Be careful, AppleHPET.kext is required for native speed stepping on compatible Intel hardware.

If your USB ports are listed as being on an 'Expansion Slot' in System Profiler, you may be able to fix it in DSDT by following the instructions given here:
