CSMatt
When I first built my computer, I had an ATI RADEON 9550 AGP instead of my current RADEON 9600XT. The 9550 does not work with Windows 98 (despite several tries), so I returned it for the 9600XT. The 9600XT says that it is supposed to work for Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE through the Windows ME drivers. The CATALYST drivers worked perfectly the first time I installed them, but after a reformat I have never been able to get them to work again. Often I get an instant BSOD every time I install CATALYST on Windows 98 and reboot. Other times I attempt the install, CATALYST works fine but SoundMAX does not work. The problem seems to be with the drivers for SoundMAX Digital Audio; I can have either CATALYST or SoundMAX installed and they work just fine, but they will not work together. The odd thing here is that they initially worked just fine together. I tried constant reformatting and repartitioning, getting updated chipset drivers (they already were and still are the latest drivers from ASUS), updating the BIOS (the first time I was using an updated BIOS and have since reverted back to the original BIOS, the factory-set BIOS, the BIOS I was using initially, and just about every updated BIOS since), installing earlier and later CATALYST drivers, and contacting both ATI and SoundMAX (SoundMAX did not reply, and ATI's suggestion of using different CATALYST drivers and updated chipset drivers didn't work). I have asked several different people, and no one seems to know the answer. Since the members here seem to be experienced with such things, I may as well ask here. blackentangled
you have a very fast rig, why use win98 still? Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/12406-bsod-with-ati-cards-and-windows-98-se/#findComment-78515 Share on other sites
CSMatt
It's for legacy support for older programs. Windows XP's Compatibility Mode doesn't always work, so I have a duel-boot system. U.C.
Seriously, use VMWare to emulate win98. As for games use DOSbox. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/12406-bsod-with-ati-cards-and-windows-98-se/#findComment-78616 Share on other sites
domino
I must agree with UC. Win98 is very fast and resposive under vmware and you have no hardware conflicts. Just add another gig of memory and you're set for the next 2yrs. CSMatt
Will QEMU produce the same results? I don't intend on purchasing VMWare to make the image. In the meantime, are their other compatible Windows 98 drivers for either the ATI RADEON 9600XT or SoundMAX? Colonel
VMWare is distributing the VMWare Server Beta for free. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/12406-bsod-with-ati-cards-and-windows-98-se/#findComment-97376 Share on other sites
CSMatt
Is it reasonably stable enough? I managed to install Windows 98 on QEMU, but the host system often crashes when I use it.
