exido
First of all im sorry if i posted in the wrong forum,if i did admins please move it in the right place, thanks . Ok so i decided to install a leopard o a pc. ive searched google and found this tutorial which i think you all are familiar with it. tutorial . And this is the problem, in that tutorial the guy used iatkos 1.0. And this is the part which gets very confusing for me. The tutorial is more than one year old. And are there any new versions. of iatkos or something. Becouse i looked around the forum. And seen many updates . If i install that 1.0 version how can i update it, maybe there are some links in the forum (sorry i couldnt find in or just missed it;/ ) If i find my graphics card not working or audio what should i do? again noob question Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/123008-im-totally-new-at-this/ Share on other sites
Korrupted
Before you consider installing, you have to ask yourself a few questions: 1. What are my PC specs? 1a. Are my PC specs compatible? Any x86 CPU(Intel Core/Core based Celeron is preferred) with at least SSE2 512MB ram or higher[Can probably run on less, but very sluggish] 5GB free space for leo[10-20+ recommended], 3 or so for Tiger DVD drive Any graphics card[for basic VESA..for Leo, grab an ATI X1600 or higher, or any NVidia higher than Geforce 4, Tiger, nearly anything will work with 2d/3d, seriously, as long as it's not ancient/too new] 1b. If not, what should I upgrade to[you can google this or ask for help]? Generally good CPUs/chipsets: CPU: Intel Pentium 4 or higher[i recommend a core 2 if possible..it makes everything work smoother, both in performance and reliability; no waiting for patches, etc.] Chipsets: Intel 975, P35, G33(I think?), etc etc. Graphics: Anything NVidia past Geforce 4 will work in OSX, except maybe mobility GFs and a few other obscure ones. RAM: Any HDD: Any, but SATA is preferred esp. with one of the above chipsets DVD drive: Any, but SATA should work too KB/Mouse/Monitor: Aim for a USB KB/Mouse if possible as Macs use USB and tend to drop PS/2 support, but you CAN get it if needed. Monitor? Anything that supports VGA/DVI. 2. Do I want Leopard or Tiger(Tiger is generally more hardware compatible, but this is arguable at this point if you ask me. Older hardware[older ATIs, etc] work better in Tiger as newer drivers leave old hardware out to dry.)? 3. Do I know what a terminal and/or command line interface are? 4. Do I know how to backup/partition drives correctly? Anyway, Google and the Wiki[arguable, but eh..] are your friends. As for the latest distros(Intel): JaS 10.5.4 Client/Server, Iatkos v4, Kalyway 10.5.2, iDeneb? AMD distros: LawlessPPC 10.5.4, Zephyroth 10.5.2, iDeneb 10.5.4? Haven't looked at that one.. exido
Before you consider installing, you have to ask yourself a few questions: 1. What are my PC specs? 1a. Are my PC specs compatible? <- The most important question, obviously. The "minimum requirements" for Leo/Tiger: Any x86 CPU(Intel Core/Core based Celeron is preferred) with at least SSE2 512MB ram or higher[Can probably run on less, but very sluggish] 5GB free space for leo[10-20+ recommended], 3 or so for Tiger DVD drive Any graphics card[for basic VESA..for Leo, grab an ATI X1600 or higher, or any NVidia higher than Geforce 4, Tiger, nearly anything will work with 2d/3d, seriously, as long as it's not ancient/too new] 1b. Older hardware[older ATIs, etc] work better in Tiger as newer drivers leave old hardware out to dry.)? 3. Do I know what a terminal and/or command line interface are? <- You will need to use this sooner or later, to install a drive, or rescue your leo/tiger install if you screw it up. 4. Do I know how to backup/partition drives correctly? <- This is a big one right here, because if you fudge up your windows/*nix/whatever install and you don't know what you're doing, you might not get it back. *Hey,thanks for replying so fast. Yeah i know that my pc is leopard compatible its intel core duo2 sse3 ssse3 (thats what "everest" says) my graphics card is geforce 9600gt ( i dont know if that means much). 2000 ram, hard drive space not a problem. with the pc i have everything right. *And i want a leopard becouse its a newer version of course. *Yeah i think i know where the commands are. Well in windows i know but in leopard its a bit diferent thing. *For the partition drives i dont know how to back it up. Maybe you can tell me or you have some tutorial in your bookmarks if not ill search myself. *For the distros theres an iatkos version 4 know? havent seen it.. Korrupted
I think Kalyway is known for being more stable, but I dunno, I never downloaded them. If you want a more recent release though, go for Jas 10.5.4. Dualbooting? Use EasyBCD for vista along with Chain0. I think that's how I did it on my hacktop..I'll double check later. MGJulius
It solely depends on your hardware. iATKOS runs the closest plugins to the original OS X so the more compatible hardware you have the better for that distro. I suggest though to go with Korrupted and use JaS 10.5.4 release. I've heard many good things about it. Edit: Oh and if you want to dual boot on the same physical harddrive I would use Chameleon bootloader which will list the other partitions on that hdd so you can boot into vista and os x.
