The bootup time on the Acer Aspire One entry level model on youtube is absurd, something like two minutes and ten seconds! I think I'm right in saying it's the entry level model with the SSD 'hard drive'. I would prefer the one with the real hard drive and a 1gig memory upgrate, though upgrading the memory on those things is a complete and utter nightmare and could end up ruining your day.

In recap based on what I saw in a computer store.

Aspire One - suprisingly good keyboard, good screen, presumably good for watching movies. It looked pretty sharp, as though worth more than the asking price. Dismal stated battery life - and the point being it would be worse under Leopard. Buy a second battery, assuming you can? I started up OpenOffice - and the Acer crashed. Great... The reviews have warned that the packaged Linux bundle needs some work.

MSI Wind - good keyboard, non shiny but tolerable screen - you really want to see one in the flesh before buying one; not something that I would want to use for watching a movie. Stated battery life is again dissapointing, which should be a key factor when looking for a plaform for OS X.

Asus, all models - I can just about touch type on their small keyboards without error, but I would find it a strain for writing long articles. The screen is dissapointing, or at least on the 700/900 models. Perhaps the 901, etc, are improved? They're not easy to find on the High Street, yet. Build quality isn't quite poor, just that it feels like a toy, whereas the Acer, for the money, feels quite slick. Stated battery life is outstanding and, if you want to run Leopard on it on battery, that should matter to you.

My nod would have to go to the Asus, though it leaves so much to be desired that I'm not quite ready to ditch my Acer 4720z. With a better battery and an improved screen, the MSI would be pretty much perfect for my basic needs.

Well you forgot the macbook.

its 10 cm bigger and is 1 KG more than a acer one

but it has a bigger screen , it looks great, keyboard works fine

batery life is about 3 houers and you get a real 100% working system loads your youtube in secs

with no downside oke maby one its more expencive as far as bad points go :)

but it loads your youtube in secs

I would much prefer people bought the real thing but if that isn't an option, at least if they are using an entry level laptop with OS X on it, provided they BUY all of the software, i.e. Leopard and iLife08, even if they then use a modified version of the former... at least they are laying a path for one day owning the real thing and, meantime, turning students and onto Apple as a better way of working.

When you consider the Acer One comes in at £229 here in the UK (120GB hard drive model) and the lowest spec macbook at least £600, the choice is easy to make. Of course nothing is better than a genuine apple product, but being budget conscious, and if you dont need all the power the macbook offers, seems like a simple choice to me.
