Hey all,

Before my brand spanking new laptop arrives, just wanted to know if the GeForce 7800 Go is locked on 1024x768 VESA 3.0 like its 6800 Go counter-part? I'd surely love to achieve 1280x1024 through editing the com.apple.Boot.plist

If it is locked, I will cry a thousand tears! well, cry until Apple has finally put out proper Intel (non skeleton) nVidia driver support :D

Well, I don't personally have a 7800, but I do think that all nvidia cards are getting only basic support right now.

Some get more support when using 10.4.1, but it still is not great.

Someone coorect me if I'm wrong, but I think this is an nvidia-wide thing.

not all cards are getting basic support, just check through the Wiki and you'll see.

Note: I just edited my first post to make things a bit clearer :D.

I have exactly the same configurated Dell 9400 (T2600, 2G Ram and 7800 Go). You can edit (as have I) the com.apple.Boot.plist to get 1280x1024 resolution (follow instructions on this forum by searching). Because nVidia cards are not yet supported in osx86, that appears to be the max resolution we can get to with the 7800 Go card. If we use the full 17" screen on the notebook, the problem is that the graphics are stretched (4:3 stretched onto a 16:10 screen). I have changed the video option in the BIOS to unselect stretching. This left me with a smaller graphic interface with black bars around, but at least the words and icons appear normal.

By the way, can you tell me whether you have managed to get sound and wireless network? I was not able to get them working.

Thanks.

Ah, I thought the sound would work without a hitch? my previous Inspiron 9300 had no problems with sound functioning and they both use Sigmatel cards right? btw, 1280x1024 is not a 4:3 ratio screen, it is infact a 5:4 ratio screen, and I have no idea why it was made VESA standard.

You can stop the screen from being stretched in your BIOS settings, but then it leaves black boarders on the sides

When my new lappy arrives, I'll see what I can do to get the sound working.

would it be possible for you to post the exact model information on your Sigmatel card?

the one in my I9300 is a SigmaTel STA9705/51 @ Intel 8280 1FBM ICH6-M - AC'97 Audio Controller [b-1]

I used EVEREST Home for the PC and look under Multimedia > PCI / PnP Audio and it lists the device.

Have you tried the suggestion in this thread by any chance?

It says Intel 82801GBM ICH7-M - High Definition Audio Controller [A-1]

Don't think the suggestions in the thread you mentioned will work. Sound never worked for me even under 10.4.3 Jas 4.2b patch. Mind you, I only tested the audio under the built-in speakers of the laptop and not tested the audio jacks.

Ah right, looks like the difference between yours and mine is that mine isn't a HDA controller (on my I9300).

My new I9400 is now on its way in the post, so I'll check to see what sound hardware I have by Friday most likely.

It doesn't bode well if the sound didn't work in 10.4.3 either

My 9400 has the following Sigmatel card (according to Everest):

High Definition Audio:

Audio Controller Type Intel 82801GB(M) ICH7

Codec Name SigmaTel STAC9200

Codec ID 83847690h

Codec Revision 00102201h

Slightly off topic, Everest defines my CPU as an engineering sample:

CPU Properties:

CPU Type Mobile DualCore Intel Pentium M, 2166 MHz (6 x 361)

CPU Alias Yonah

Instruction Set x86, MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3

Original Clock 2166 MHz

Engineering Sample Yes

L1 Code Cache 32 KB

L1 Data Cache 32 KB

L2 Cache 2 MB (On-Die, ATC, Full-Speed)

Is that normal? Sounds weird to me.

Oh, and by the way... My 7800 Go runs at 1280x1024, so that's no problem.

With 2 cores on the Yonah enabled the entire system is a bit yerky though. With only 1 core enabled it is silky smooth...

A quote I found explaining exactly what an Engineering Sample is, but this really applies to a P4 and not a Yonah.

Only engineering samples (that are made for testing) and the Extreme Edition models have the unlocked clock multiplier. Engineering samples are identified with the letters “ES” and are not available in the market. Some manufacturers, such as ABIT, have created motherboards that can bypass that protection against overclocking.

So count yourself lucky, though I don't think there is any kind of noticeable difference unless you are running the ES on a special mobo, the Dell BIOS is extremely limited.

You shouldn't really be experiencing any jerkyness with both cores enabled, did you make sure to only apply the base patch to your 10.4.5 installation?

Looks like your sound controller is the same as Beejay's.

Copying that specific kext mentioned in the thread might fix the audio jack output but not the internal speaker output.

  • 2 weeks later...

devilhood,

Sorry for the long silence - I had been travelling.

I tried copying that kext and it still didn't work. Actually, no sound comes out from 10.4.3 either.

Have you received your 9400 yet? Any success from your end?

BTW, have you tried np's nvidia driver on the GeForce 7800 Go yet? I tried it last night and got panics.
