Hi guys,

Sorry about this, on most computer stuff I'm at least reasonably knowledgable, but on the OSX x86 thing i'm really not i'm afraid, i'm a total n00b. So... My problem is that I have downloaded a 10.4.3 pre-patched bootable DVD that seems to boot ok on my test system, it comes up "press any key to install OSX" etc... and when i do the grey apple screen comes up with the little turning dial at the bottom. However, after a few minutes i get a circle symbol with a slash through it (like a "No Entry" sign or something) which appears on a square of white background at the top of the apple symbol. I figure this has something to do with my hardware or something... but if anyone could enlighten me as to exactly what it means, and if there is anything i can do to get around this, i would really appreciate it.

PS. i tried using the -v command but it seemed to crash the computer and make it reboot almost immediately.

My computer is an Advent T9202, with specs as follows:

CPU Intel Pentium 4 550J (3.4 GHz)

Motherboard MS 7046

Memory 512 MB DDR RAM - (1x 512 - PC3200)

Hard Drive Seagate ST3200822AS 200GB SATA

Seagate ST3200822AS 200GB SATA

CD Drive Artec DHM-G48 16X DVD-ROM

Video Card ATI Radeon x600 Pro PCI Express

Sound Card Realtek High Definition Audio (Azalia)

Many thanks guys for any help you can give me on this!

David

SATA issues are one possibility, the other is some motherboard incompatibility. I don't know that motherboard at all. Most MS-xxxx motherboards are made by MSI, but I can't find this particular model on the MSI website, their listing jumps from MS-7043 to MS-7057. I did try quite hard to find it because the chipset is critical to getting OSx86 to work. A search of the global MSI website says "product does not exist". Are you sure on the numbers?

Advent is a brand 'manufactured' in the UK by PC-World/Dixons and they have a history of putting together a lot of cheap components and sometimes use custom stuff which isn't sold in the open market.

See if you can find out the chipset and let us know what you discover.

The MS 7046 has an Intel 915P chipset, ICH6 and should be compatible with your SATA drive: http://www.measter.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/cpuinfo.html

You are probably running into 10.4.3 unsupported ATI video installation problem. Try 10.4.4 & .5 which has better support for ATI and a better match for your setup anyway.

thanks very much for the responses... i'll try out the 10.4.4 version and see if it helps. i got a hold of the 10.4.3 version cause it seemed most readily available and i have read it was the most reliable. I hope its not an issue with the SATA drives... that would screw my idea of using the spare PC as a test bed for OSX x86 lol!

Many thanks, will let you know how i get on,

Dave

Hi again everyone!

Well, I managed to get 10.4.3 installed in the end - Some issues with OSX installation apparently not liking my DVD drive having its settings on "auto".

Anyway, I installed 10.4.3 and all seemed well on the whole, my ATi Radeon x600 wasnt recognised, but that didnt surprise me, and my onboard LAN on the Intel 915P chipset motherboard didnt work... Again not unexpected.

I proceeded to update to 10.4.4, from another pre-patched DVD, as I had heard and read that it fixes a number on the incompatibilities from 10.4.3. However, it seems to have taken things a step back if anything... My graphics card still isnt recognised, and thus I am on a 1024x768 resolution on a lovely 20" CinemaHD display... not what you want...

Also, my network still doesnt work, although it seems to show up in system profiler, the option to select the box in network setup is still greyed. The thing that i am most confused at though is the removal of support for my onboard Realtek ac97 audio.

Does anyone know how i can first sort out the network issue? The graphics thing i could probably work on if i could get on the internet from my OSX x86 machine. If someone could make a suggestion on the network thing, i would really appreciate it a lot.

Many thanks

Dave

Right, i've just reverted back to 10.4.3 cause it seemed to like my system a little better than 10.4.4... Have to say I'm really disappointed with the network though... Thought that with it being an Intel chipset mobo that most of the integrated stuff would work fine. Guess that shows how much i know!

Its funny, 4 years at Computer Shopper Magazine, and I never came across a situation i was so stumped with... Guess thats what I get for messing with another OS!

Dont spose anyone could tell me if there is a way for me to get OSX to pick up the Creatix wireless network card i have in there then? Either that or I may have access to a belkin wireless PCI card... have to make sure tomorrow.

And as for the ATi graphics... I assume thats a standard problem with ATi cards then? No work around? I'm getting a bit hacked off with my CinemaHD not being able to display at 1660x1080 :)

Cheers for all the help guys

Dave

Right - The graphics thing i did some research on and found the com.apple.boot.plist workaround... shame i cant set a widescreen resolution but never mind, i guess i'll live.

Now then... I have been unable to find anything on the Creatix wireless adapter for OSX x86... If anyone feels they might be able to help out on this please get in touch :D Just a shame it seems the work on the Via Rhine network drivers has ground to a halt. I have no idea what chipset the Creatix wireless is based on, only that it is 802.11 G standard.

Incidentally, everything enle is working a treat... Got the divx for Mac beta 2 which works fine and is playing my xvid movie backups with no problems, the DVD player works well (and even has the zoom function which means i can correct the AR for the widescreen display), and i have managed to install a couple of other apps that i thought might be useful...

Cheers for the help, and I hope i hear something on the wireless adaptor soon :)
