TOS 1.04
Hi clipper99 I am not completely familiar with this but i think I know where you are going wrong. First of all the reason that you cannot simply drop new kexts into the extensions directory on an installation disk is because they are supposed to be already cached (I think the actual OS for booting on most installation disks usually goes without the extensions directory altogether to save on space... at least that is what i have observed on some 10.4 installations discs). I am guessing that the author has created a shell script or binary to add extensions to the cache so that they can be loaded at boot... and seeing as you are referring to ".bat" and ".exe" I'm guessing you are trying to do this from windows... The shell script/binary whichever - will only work on OS X (running from the install disk in a read+write mode, and running the command via the terminal), so your in a bit of a catch22 unless you can find another machine/board to run OS X and modify the disc with first. You will need to restore your Kalyway DVD ISO to a HDD and boot from it on another compatible board/pc then follow the instructions add the kext and run the file to cache it... then shutdown and clone the HDD to a DVD and run it on your Asus board... or just run the HDD with the modified installation system on your Asus board and install to another HDD... whichever way you want to go about it. clipper99
OK, so at the beginning of the install the disk utility does not see my HD. Which makes sense 'cause the hardware compatibilty list for my motherboard (ASUS P5K-SE) says I need to apply a patch to make the IDE work. I have found the patch, so now I am assuming I need to modify/slipstream the Kalyway DVD. I have added the kext file I need to the right directory but here's where I am stuck; the following instructions make no sense (well, some) to me and I've been unable to modify the DVD image. "if you want adding drivers support to dvd boot then put kexts you want add to dvd extensions in this folder (you can find natit for at hd in this folder) and run Add_kext_to_dvd_boot.command !!!" How the heck do I run that file? It's not a .bat file, or an .exe file..... Has anyone here actually done this? I've seen this question asked many pages ago but there was never an answer and I have spent the better part of 2 hours looking for better instructions. cheers! dang it! wanted to post this in the "Kalyway" sticky..SORRY! I'll post it in there. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/118355-getting-a-little-frustrated/#findComment-838393 Share on other sites
clipper99
Well, first off, thanks for taking the time to read and respond to my post. I really appreciate it! This certainly makes sense to me now! Heh, "Mr. Kalyway" could have saved me a little time if he had mentioned that those instructions were Mac specific. You're certainly understating the matter that this is a catch-22 situation. BUT!!!!...I've just read a post that points me to a glimmer of hope. A program called "Transmac" which will hopefully let me alter the ISO image and add the kext file I need into my image. Fingers crossed and off I go. I'm so tantalizingly close... cheers Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/118355-getting-a-little-frustrated/#findComment-839449 Share on other sites
TOS 1.04
Your welcome clipper99 However I'm affraid purely being able to mount the ISO and read/write HFS+ on windows may not be enough... if the file that appends the cache is a shell script or binary it will have to run on OS X (and specifically running from the OS X installation disk to be moded so it knows where to cache it)... it is unlikely that it was intended to run from windows... if you can point me to the directions i will tell verify that. If you cannot find another board to mod the disk with then perhaps you could run it in a virtual machine like parallels or something? I'm not too familiar with virtual machines of late so i don't know if the kalaway disk has any problems running in a virtual machine.... i know it can be done with certain releases of OSx86 though... that would be the way to go if another pc is out of the question.
