Hello.

From what I've been reading, Mac Pros come in 2 flavors.

1.1- "Mac Pro" The original. It came out in 2006 and lasted through 2007. The memory is DDR2-667FB, and the system bus maxes out at 1333mhz. It uses an Intel 5000X chipset. It came with a lame nVidia 7300 videocard and Tiger OS. I've got one of these. It's insanely fast at Video editing.

3.1- "Early 2008" model. The current 8-core Mac Pro now available in stores. DDR2-800FB memory, 1600mhz bus, PCI Express 2.0, Intel 5400 chipset, Leopard and an ATI 2600. Even faster!

Was there a "2.1"? I don't know.

What's the difference? The 2008 model has 2 quad core CPUs instead of 2 dual cores. They use less power (than previous 4-core cpus), have more cache, use faster memory, have a higher memory limit, a newer chipset, supports PCI Express 2.0.... basically, it's a major update rather than a complete redesign.

The Hardware is the big difference.

The only advantage the originals have over the 2008 model is Tiger support. (the new ones only support Leopard and can't run Tiger directly) This is only important if you use older programs that don't support Leopard, such as Adobe CS2.

The obvious advantage of the 2008 model is even higher speeds and capacities.

If your signature is correct, you would benefit from getting another 2 memory modules. Having only 2 memory sticks limits you to Dual Channel memory. Using memory in multiples of 4 (4 or 8 sticks) allow quad channel memory operation which makes a large difference in video editing performance. It's best to have them all the same size, but odd combinations do function.

If anyone out there doesn't like their 2008 model and wants to trade for an original Mac Pro 1.1, just let me know! :P
