I have a Pioneer DVD-RW drive, SATA, that reads dvds, burns dvds. I think it even reads CDs but it will not recognize a blank cd to be able to burn it. I have tried many different blank cds and some of different brands even. It is seen in profiler as a cd/dvd reader/writer even.

PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-212D:

Firmware Revision: 1.21

Interconnect: ATAPI

Burn Support: Yes (Generic Drive Support)

Profile Path: None

Cache: 2000 KB

Reads DVD: Yes

CD-Write: -R, -RW

DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW

Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

any ideas why it doesnt recognize blank CDs

just checked and it does recognize already burned cds.

You can use booting into Win to flash or use dvrflashX!

http://dvrflash.rpc1.org/

You can use stuffit to extract the firmware out of the pioneer_firmware.exe file.

The file you use with dvrflash (in terminal) is named xxxxxx.124.

I would check in a different OS to make sure it still burns CDs there, the laser for burning them may be dead.

Its not that it just doesnt burn CDs, but it cannot even read/recognize a blank CD.

I will see if I can flash the firmware tonight after work and hope that helps.

That is why I am thinking write laser for CD may be dead when you put the disk in read laser finds nothing to read drive then switches to write laser to perform its test and see what the write media supports when it can't do it nothing gets detected at least that is my understanding of how it works could be wrong though.

Hopefully it is that simple.

that could be. i didnt realize that there were 2(/4?) different lasers within the drive. i didnt have time to do the firmaware update yet but i will in the next day or two.
