lenrex
I was wondering if it's possible to overclock my Q9450 running 10.5.4? I was running Leo4all V3 with the default 9.2.0 kernel and was overclocking fine. I upgraded to the Kalyway 10.5.3 combo update, and installed the Kalyway vanilla kernel 9.3.0 or 9.3.3 (can't remember which one it was exactly, there's only one vanilla option in the Kalyway kernel update). Then I web updated to 10.5.4 But now I can't overclock the CPU. Does anybody have any ideas? If the speed is not showing accordingly in OSx it must be the SMBIOS kext or you just need to change it cosmetically. lenrex
I know this, but the same settings "in the bios" that I used to overclock in 10.5.2 won't let me even boot up. I had to go back to my default bios settings to get 10.5.4 to boot. Somehow since I switched over to vanilla kernel, my overclocking settings in my bios won't let even get into the darwin bootloader screen. adamsweeting
Updating OS X will not cause that behaviour... The kernel isn't loaded before the bootloader starts up, so it looks like your issue is elsewhere. If it was kernel related you'd see the bootloader screen, and then as OS X tries to boot - the kernel would hang then. lenrex
I changed some settings in my bios, and it's back running overclocked... I think it had something to do with these settings? CPU Spread Spectrum PCIE Spread Spectrum C1E Suppport CPU TM Function Vanderpool Technology Execute Disable Bit Max CPUID Value Limit Anybody know what those do for the most part? Should they be enabled or disabled? Back running at 3.41ghz quad core, 4x1gb Corsair ddr2 1066 running at 850mhz but overclocked North Bridge voltage to 1.45 to boost memory back up. (I should have gotten the matching 2x2gb 1066 chips instead of the 2 pairs....) Seems stable. In an overclocking forum somebody suggested to disable all of those as a general rule of thumb. When I disable all of them, it goes into the bootloader, tries to boot, flashes some code for a split second, then reboots.... I can run all of those disabled with the default 9.2.0 kernel, but not the kalyway 9.3 vanilla update kernel, nor vanilla 9.4 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/115433-overclock-possible-running-vanilla-kernel/#findComment-822137 Share on other sites
resiroth
I ran a 10.5.2 vanilla kernel computer perfectly for a while. When I overclocked ( and obviously disabled those settings in the BIOS ) it will not finish booting. It gets to the white screen with the spinning symbol ( not beachball ) and restarts. I've going to have a go with the 10.5.4 Aitkos release. resiroth
anyone figure out which settings need to be enabled? I'm reinstalling 10.5.2 with the BIOS settings for overclocking and so far no issues ( not done with install yet ) so we'll see how that goes. I've got to figure out how to update to 10.5.4 since iatkos didn't recognise my hard drive. Slither2008
What messages are you getting with boot option -v ? When I overclock my Q6600 from 2.4ghz to 3.6ghz...I found that OSX 10.5.4 can't communicate properly with the CPU to get it's info or something....as soon as I lower it back to 3.2ghz it boots fine. I have my CPU watercooled and under full load it reaches up to 58 degrees celcius. This is leading me to believe that I really should be cooling the northbridge chipset also...and possibly the ram.
