So about a month ago I decided to build a Hackintosh for the purpose of running Logic 8 to make some music.  I have everything minus the hard drive, and have been reading the forums for around the last two weeks an hour or so a day.

The thing is...when I read alot of these posts, I might as well be reading chinese or something at times because it, well....seems very complicated.  What was first something exciting to put together is now making me very nervous.

My hardware that I have purchased so far is as follows:

EP 35-DS4 rev 2.1

ATI Raedon Sapphire HD 2600XT

Pioneer Black IDE Model DVR-115DBK - OEM

Intel Q6600 2.4 OEM

Freezer 7 Pro cooler

Briza Case

2x2GB Mushkin RAM

Retail OS X 10

Hard drive - purchasing one this weekend

Now I have poured over what seems like hundreds of threads here and have had at times thought I found what I need but then, reading into the post get lost.  Are all of you programmers?  I just want to make some music but can't even come close to shelling out the money for a Mac Pro and with my credit...forget about it.

How many of these threads do you get a week?  I feel like a retard asking what seems like simple questions but I am seriously lost.

Now I think all I need to do is follow THIS?

Seems easy to some but reading that I think I die a little inside for some reason.  Would it be easier for me to just download one of the torrents and go from there?  If so would the process go something like -

1 - Download and burn torrent

2 - Adjust BIOS

3 - Partition drive

4 - Boot from DVD and install

5 - Install drivers (kexts?) as necessary

6 - Hunt down any other necessary drivers (kexts?) for audio, etc...

7 - Get to making sweet sweet trance music...

If there is a "dumbed" down version of how to get what I want in another thread PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE point me in the right direction as I feel that I am almost about ready to give up.

Too many options I feel.  I just wanna make some music.

Forgive me for being honest, but seriously, aren't you being a little too picky? I mean look at windows.

If you don't have the install disc (just to be fair, coz i assume you don't have the os x one either until you torrent it), then you'll be torrenting and burning anyway.

Then you'll usually partition and install when you're doing a full installation for windows as well.

You'll be setting up network and user details along with language options. (Albeit the network and language options can be 'skipped')

AFTER you get into windows you'll have to install your gfx card, sound card (or usb sound equipment if you have one for your music), correct keyboard/mouse drivers and software.

Not to mention you'll be restarting many times in windows during the whole process.

with hackintoshes, of course it's not as easy as the real thing, but believe me, it's as easy as it gets already. If you were here a few years ago looking at some of the ways to get your hardware working or simple just trying to install it and making it work, you'd probably won't even consider giving it a go.

For recent hacked osx86 leopard installations that you'll find everywhere, most of the hardware kexts(~drivers) are alreadying being installed while you're installing OS. (providing you check the right ones)

I really don't see why you're thinking it's such a hassle. If you think about it, windows is too but you've been dealing it with years already.

Just give it a go.

Most Valuable Advice I Ever Got on InsanelyMac: Use the HCL, Luke.

Your primary issue is not going to be graphics, or Airport, but sound. Check the HCL and see which distro supports your audio chip.

step 1. find a friend with a fast internet connection. Google for Kalyway, Leo4all, iatkos torrents. If your friend is stuck on Windows, buy Magic ISO to turn the .DMG file into an .ISO (Windows chokes on .DMG files.) Burn all three. Buy your friend a nice mexican dinner in thanks.

step 2. Install Kalyway 10.5.1. If that doesn't work, try Leo4All. or iatkos.

I have an old D915GUX board with a 3.06 celeron on it. All three of these distros worked out of the box, including sound. (I had to buy a $10 NIC, but only because I think the on-board NIC was fried.) I didn't have to touch my BIOS. It just worked. Installing Hackintosh is fun, easy and nowadays requires hardly any skills, thanks to all the geniuses here who have done so much work over the past couple of years.

Once you're up and running, you'll want to head down to the Apple store and pick up a legal copy of Leopard for $129. Come on, you've just gotten a $3,000 Mac for about $1,200. Show Steve a little love.

If all else fails, you can buy a copy of OpenSuse at the newstand / Borders/ Barnes & Noble. Lotsa music apps for Linux.

The thing is...when I read alot of these posts, I might as well be reading chinese or something at times because it, well....seems very complicated. What was first something exciting to put together is now making me very nervous.

I was skeptical before buying a system very similar to what you have for Final Cut Pro work. I need my Hackintosh to do editing work, not just fiddle around and goof with, so I was really nervous that I'd find myself having spent $900 for a system that isn't really reliable enough to get work done on.

Now that I've built it and completed 3 major projects and the machine has paid for itself several times over, I couldn't be happier with the decision to go Hackintosh. This machine kicks ass, and I wouldn't trade it for anything but a much better MacPro that costs 3x as much.

I think you're probably just at the same point I was before having a working machine and just a pile of expensive parts that you're not quite sure will really add up to a working Mac. But you certainly have everything required (I don't know anything about ATI graphics cards, but the rest looks great).

The exact process can be confusing, but actually the EP35-DS4 is one of the easier boards to install on. Follow a decent guide, and you'll have a fully working system in an hour or less. Most of the 'hacks' involved are easier than they seem, and many things now have even simpler ways of working. (For example, I redid my main install recently and didn't need to even touch the terminal once to have a fully working 10.5.3 install.)

Once you're up and running, and everything works nicely, it's probably best not to feel the need to mess with things just because a new number update comes out. Right now, 10.5.4 is out, but I see no need to risk screwing up my machine just to change a number from 3 to 4. A lot of the threads you may read are people finding ways to get their machine working again after screwing it up with a (truth be told, largely needless) update. Just wait for a foolproof install method to come out before jumping on the update bandwagon.

I run Logic Pro 8 on my machine and as far as I know, it runs fine. (I don't have any extra I/O audio hardware, just built in). If you search around, you'll find all sorts of people running mHacks and making music with them.
