Running Leo4allV2 ( 10.5.2 ) on my hack I use Time Machine to backup my systemdrive. Is it possible to recover the drive completely if the drive goes down? Like buying a new internal HD, install a fresh copy from Leo4all DVD and then restore from my external TimeMachine Backup HD?

I used to use CopyCarbonCloner when I was running 10.4.11 on a real Mac but then I had to boot from an external HD to be able to unmount the internal system disk and then make a clone of it to an bootable external HD.

Can I trust Time Machine on a Hackintosh?

To be bootable on a Hackintosh, the boot blocks must be altered.

Here is a sequence which works:

1) initialize the new drive using Disk Utility, to GUID,

2) apply the pre-patch modification, and

3) run CCC or SD! as if it was a normal drive.

As the pre-patch script only affects the boot blocks (and the EFI code), it doesn't affect the data.

If the drive being cloned is a boot drive to which the post-patch had already been applied, then there is no need to rerun the post-patch, and the resulting drive will be bootable if the source drive was.

My observation is the pre-patch is completely configuration independent, whereas the post-patch is very much configuration dependent.

Segregating the two into pre- (and configuration independent) and post- (and configuration dependent) made good sense.

If the drive is purely a data drive, then there is no reason to apply either the pre- and/or post-patches.

I already have done a restore from/via TimeMachine. Just reinstall with your DVD from scratch. If your Time Capsule (or the drive you setup as for Time Capsule) is up during the install process, you will have the option to restore from it. There will be more options : restore users file, or users + system or (can't remeber the 3rd choice)

You have to do a disk image too. I put it personnaly on the Time Capsule. Just boot on your DVD to do this. To restore it's easy too : choose your disk image and put it on the partition you want to restore.

(btw backup and restore processes are so easy with native tools, that you must be a fool to live without backup)

peter: i'm not completely sure what you mean by pre-patch modification... can you please clarify this?

i want to replace my bootable guid partitioned 500gb hdd with a 1,5 tb one.

my plan is initializing the disk and partition to guid. then use carbon copy cloner. after that i'll replace the old hdd with the new one. then start with 132 boot cd, hopefully boot into osx and install chameleon boot loader again... does that make sense?

fyr: time machine doesn't restore all the applications i had installed plus config fiels, or does it?

ok i just successfully cloned my hard drive from a 500gb one to a 1tb one!

it was pretty straight forward, after all the haslle of getting the system running smoothly i certainly didn't expect this to happen :) It worked exactly as described above!
