turkeydog
Ever since my introduction to the osx86 community, and my own experiences that followed, i have always thought about buying a shiny new mac. Deciding that i should make this decision was not the main issue. It was WHICH mac i should buy. I am a graphic guy, as well as a student in college, and was looking for an affordable yet stylish way to keep my productivity up to par. I jumped back and forth between the iMac 24 inch and the Mac Pro, and in the end, went with the iMac, because of the price difference, and the "all in one" package that it offers. I have a problem with tinkering with my hardware, and regretting it... Plus, the "back to school" discount with the free ipod touch, also swayed my decision. So, i figured a closed, pre-built machine would do me good. One in which i couldnt open and mess with (even though i am adding more ram). As for the ram, im going to buy an additional 2 gigs from here. Is there anywhere else i could get this ram cheaper? hmm..i think im going to call my mac "My digital playground"....can't wait till it gets here Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/112575-taking-the-plunge-into-mac/ Share on other sites

sarahbau
Congrats on the new Mac. I was trying to decide between the same two computers for a while, but decided on the Mac Pro for the same reason you chose the iMac. lol. It seemed like the iMac was just as much as the Mac Pro (quad core). Also, I already had two monitors, and wanted to be able to be able to expand it more. turkeydog
yeah, the monitor thing was sort of an issue. I figured later on i'll go all out purchase a Mac Pro with a nice monitor (im going from a 19 inch widescreen to the iMac 24 incher)....bur for now i figured this would be best...since i do most of my graphic work at work...and not at home. Its weird because they ship the ipod touch separate with the mac...so i have to make sure i'm home at two different times. Does anyone know if apple ships early or late within the "expected" shipping days? I'm trippin over here waitin for this thing... I'm sure it varies, but my Mac Pro shipped on the first day of the estimated range. It arrived a day earlier than estimated as well. turkeydog
I went through the process of customizing a mac pro, and realized it ships within 24 hours if you don't customize it. I'm guessing you bought ram from another place than apple? where did you buy yours? Synaesthesia
A good place is newegg.com Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/112575-taking-the-plunge-into-mac/#findComment-797922 Share on other sites
sarahbau
I go it from Other World Computing. $170 for 4GB (2x2). $15 more than the iRam from NewEgg, but I've never heard of iRam, so I went with a company I trust (OWC has been in the Mac business for 20 years or so). I did buy the Raptor from NewEgg though, since it's the same drive at either place. However, I did buy my MacBook's RAM from NewEgg last year. There are more choices when it comes to standard RAM than FB-DIMMs. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/112575-taking-the-plunge-into-mac/#findComment-797974 Share on other sites
