maximilian298453
Continuing with the premise of figuring out the best hackintosh equivalents to Apple's offerings to serve as some guidance to those wishing to make their own new systems, here are the stats for the 20" iMac (the 2.66 GHz model): 2.66 GHz T Core Duo ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory 320 GB drive 2 GB memory (expandable to 4) Superdrive built-in wifi 4 usb 2.0 ports (4 basically makes it equivalent to the imac, which has three and two on their keyboard) firewire 400 port & 800 port built-in ethernet isight camera bluetooth audio line in/optical digital audio input built-in microphone apple remote keyboard / mouse Price: $1,500 I have no idea what motherboard is a good basis for this one. My p5gc wouldn't do it. Any suggestions? Thanks. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/111421-best-20-imac-equivalent-hardware/ Share on other sites
vbetts
The Imacs are running on the T Core 2 duos, which are mobile versions. A desktop version should be cheaper, but you should also include price of this model. snackole
Don't forget the price of a 20" monitor. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/111421-best-20-imac-equivalent-hardware/#findComment-789262 Share on other sites
Synaesthesia
and some speakers, you know, and a keyboard and mouse and a case. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/111421-best-20-imac-equivalent-hardware/#findComment-789512 Share on other sites
maximilian298453
I didn't bother to include the monitor since there's nothing tying you to a 20" one with a desktop system, but there's one for $183 on pricewatch. I'd shell out the extra $24 and go for the 22", personally. vbetts
Well you want a price comparable to the Imacs hardware. Part of the hardware is the monitor, so you'd have to include it. maximilian298453
The idea is to get the best match to the hardware, which includes the best price for said configuration. I guess I pretty much take it for granted that it'll be cheaper than the actual Apple hardware. As the monitor isn't limited to 20" and it's so easy to just plug in a different one I think it's not that important. If you disagree, add the $183. So, what's the best MB to get all those ports and such? The asus p5gc I used only has one slot once a graphics card is installed (fan blocks one of the two), so I can't see it being expandable to have all those extras. I'll have to poke around the compatible hardware list some. Synaesthesia
Why do you want it to be exactly like the iMac? I mean just get hardware of your choice that works... The best place to look for compatible hardware is the HCL lists at the osx86 wiki... You can get yourself a compatible motherboard, a nice new Core 2 Duo processor, the Radeon 2600 or any graphics card that is on the list, some RAM, a hard drive etc. etc. Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/111421-best-20-imac-equivalent-hardware/#findComment-791504 Share on other sites

maximilian298453
The idea is to make a list of the best equivalents to all of Apple's offerings to serve as a baseline reference to those building new systems. That way, you could have a better starting point to give you more direction. The "whatever hardware that works" approach is a lot tougher for less tech savy people looking to build a hackintosh.
