Disk issue (I/O errors)

So for a while I have been trying to install 10.5.2 on my AMD machine (see specs). I have tried Kalyway 10.5.2 AMD, Zephyroth 10.5.2, and Leo4Allv3... all to no prevail.

 

I have burned all 3 to DVDs. When I boot to Kaly or Zeph, I get "Still waiting for root device..." errors, but when I use Leo4All it gets into the installer. Great! Right? Well, it would be except for the fact that it has I/O errors with the HDD I want to install to.

 

I have also tried installing using VMWare, which has always proved successful for me on this machine with Tiger. I usually just use a physical drive, install it, then boot to that drive.

 

I have tried VMWare with Zeph and Leo4All (not Kaly yet), and here is where I stand. When booting to either of them, everything seems to go fine, and it looks like it is about to start up the installer. I get the background wallpaper and my nice little revolving rainbow cursor. This goes on... forever :( I have let it run overnight and no installer shows up.

 

One thing I have seen around the boards is the boot option -F. I don't have a clue what it does, but when I use it while trying to install from VM (Leo4All), it loads the installer! When this happened I was so excited. I chose my language, English, hit next, and then the revolving rainbow cursor showed up (as usual with any install), but it never moves to the next step.

 

So basically my questions are:

 

1. What does -F do?

2. Does anyone know how to stop the I/O error (so I can install from Leo4All DVD)

3. If not, how should I go about getting the installer working in VMWare

-f "forces" reloading (or rechecking) the .kext files (all of them). AFAIK it makes the bootloader "retest for drivers" for your hardware...

 

I've had mixed success with 61x0/4x0 motherboards. Some work really well (my gigabyte 6100/430 does!). But I have an AM2 6100/410 MB at work that will NOT run OSx86 properly... I don't know if most of the nvidia chipset .kexts truly support every 4x0 series variant (405, 410, 430, blah, blah) Yours uses a 405? Try searching to see what success others have had with 6100/405 MB's (and, you meant ECS 6100SM-M, right?)

Hey, look at that, there's a typo in my siggy. Yeah, ECS. People on the forum have reported it to work fine. In the HCL forum topic someone reported no issues whatsoever. And yes it is nForce 405.

 

It is just weird that one drive works and the other doesn't when they're both PATA.

 

I understood that Kalyway and Zephyroth didn't have support for my setup when I got the still waiting for root messages. That makes perfect sense. But now I'm getting I/O errors on one disk 99% of the time. And it is a good disk. Ubuntu reads it perfectly fine, windows has no issues.

 

Maybe I should just get around to sending my Seagate Barracuda 80gb in while my 5 year warranty is still good.

 

Any ideas though as to why the I/O?

So i accidentally dropped my 40GB hdd and it is dead. So I grabbed an old 15GB hdd and popped it in... but I still get I/O errors!

 

So here are things I've ruled out:

 

It is NOT a master/slave issue

It is NOT drive specific

It is NOT a bad driver (other drive works)

 

The only thing I can think of is how the drive is prepped. The only difference between them is that Vista is installed on the one that is recognized. What is the proper setup of a drive?

I've always liked installing to a completely seperate HD.

 

Boot off the install DVD - Once you get to the first main installation screen, use the "Disk Utility" (from the "Utility" menu item up top) and partition your new drive. Look at the "Options" button and select the "MBR" partition scheme - it's easier to deal with when you're a noob... Define and format one or more partitions - use the default "Mac - journaled" format. USE a SINGLE, SHORT word to name your partitions! Keep it simple - NO spaces or goofy characters!

 

Then, go on to the main install. Once you've choosen your install disk, make sure you choose the "Customize" button and select the kernel, .kexts, and installers for your specific hardware. Choose Done, Install and let it run!

Well, this isn't my first OSx86 venture, so I know that much! :(

 

The problem is that I am getting I/O errors. For example, when I boot in verbose mode it recognizes the drive fine, but it will say "Disk2 I/O Error" one or more times. Then the installer boots up, and disk utility shows the drive (doesn't show partitions), and whenever an action is performed it fails with an I/O error.

 

So my question is... is there anything I can do to the drive to get it to have I/O be fine? Such as block sizes and whatnot.

 

I'm going to try installing Vista to it first and then boot up the osx disk. The only drive that has worked is my vista drive.

I've also been having this issue. I have tried everything. I have an IDE DVD and an IDE HDD. I'm thinking perhaps it's because the DVD and the HDD are on the same bus (bbut I only have one bus). I can install it to a flash drive and it works on the flash drive but I want it on my hdd. I tried installing it on my flash drive and then "dding it over to my partition" but I got the Still waiting for root device. When I boot off the installer it says "unable to probe..." and later "i/o error" then I'll get into the installer and it'll start installing to 8% then quit and say "Installation has failed."

Asus P5K-VM

Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2 Ghz

WD 80gb hdd

1Gb ddr2 800mhz ram
