Hello to all,

The beginning of the end?

I can't help but think that if this is true - which I think it is, then the repercussions would be swift and severe. On the "PRO" side, it would probably solve just about every installation issue anybody has with OSX86, especially if it is a robust implementation. I wonder just how small the list of Post Install hacks would shrink to. Probably next to none, with the odd exception, depending on the hardware you chose to run with. Imagine how the need for this wonderful website would shrink. No more posts for hacks, guides, and tips to install OSX86. Just buy this USB device and your good to go! Probably a great money maker until an image of the USB stick shows up as a Torrent. Assuming there are no special hardware locks - which I wonder about.

On the "Con" side my fear is that this marks the beginning of the end for the Insanely Mac web community now that the Holy Grail has been found. And I believe that it is the solution we have all been hoping for. Its a pure bios hack, as I perceive it, and it's the most elegant solution. I can only imagine the amount of hard work that went into the creation and testing of such a device. Large Props to the creators. In hindsight, I think this was inevitable and although I certainly didn't have the knowledge to invent such a device, and a large part of the OSX86 community didn't either, it was the shared goal whether we knew it or not.

Now I don't really know who made this and how it was created, and wether or not this wonderful community contributed directly or indirectly to this breakthrough, but I am keen to see if and how it works and at the same time I am hoping that it isn't the end for the osx86 community. I've certainly enjoyed all the challenges and the community spirit I've witnessed on this site. I hope it lasts.

What say ye??

The beginning of the end?

I do agree that this is a real nice community which I begin to love, but no I don't think it's the end. a lot of people still just want to try without buying anything. There are many folks like to tingker with a computer. That's where this forum can help each other. What I'm trying to say is, don't be afraid of new things. If this forum goes out, then there will probably other forum created to solve problem from "a new thing", and we probably meet again there. :P

I don't agree with that. Apple supports so little hardware with official device driver kexts there will always be people trying to cobble together solutions for hardware that isn't supported out of the box by OSX. It's not going to make all the wireless cards out there work, give instant support to all the grahics cards out there, fix all the SSE2 problems, the fan problems, audio problems, shutdown problems or anything else.

And you preceive this because your Magic 8 Ball told you? That's not obvious or even likely.

On that point I agree. Have to see it in action, though, before I give any props. At this point it's not much more than a rumor.

You're killing me. Will you please stop about how "wonderful" the "community" is? "Community spirit"? Is that the new term for the blind leading the blind? There are 0.1% of the people in this "community" who have any clue about what they're doing. The vast majority are like AOL refugees that came through some sort of time portal from 1995. :P

You've got a point there. I've calmed down since yesterday :(

Thanks BigPimpin for your response, My post yesterday was rather spontaneous, and I'm sure I could have thought it through a bit more. You do have a good point about hardware support. Even though the rumoured device promises to boot off of a stock dvd it doesn't mean we all get full hardware support. The forums will still be full of people with their particular problems with their computers. And as noted in another post some of us will still carry on a usual without buying anything.

I guess time will tell what the device is and what its capable of. I still can't imagine it being anything more than an EFI hack, and yes I do have a Magic 8 ball.

As far as your comment about the community goes, I had to laugh about your AOL refugee comment! But the cool thing is that you don't have to know what your doing to be a part of this community, In fact I would say your only real requirement is that you don't know what your doing! :)

A "perfect solution" to OS X on common PCs must include, at least:

- EFI (or an emulation) to boot

- A bypass to current TPM procedures

- Generic kexts and compatibility to all existing devices on "common PC world"

The first item is obviously the principal target of EFiX. Apple EFI cann't change randonly, or currently existing Apple computers will lost his funcionality... So, this is a "static" feature, even Apple try to put it down.

Today, Apple's implementation for TPM can be easily included on a dongle device. But, if Mr. Jobs and his guys intend to react (for sure, they will!), here is a interesting target for them. And, don't forget, all "non-Intel" models are excluded for updates after Snow Leopard: this simplifies any transition. I think that, surely, will remains some fun here... no matter what happens!

The "fun will be guaranteed on the third item! Not only by the necesity of specific solution to thousand devices. For each new update, the pleasure of "dangerous living" will be back!

OOSSXX8866, this isn't the end, only a new way!

The next step? Well, as we know, anything that boots from a Usb dongle can boot from everywere... and we all are involved with non-commercial objectives. Or not?
