cremestar
sorry to bother everybody here with another request, but this must be made by the end of august. Easy-to-read preference specs: Price: MUST be <$1000, but better if ~$850 Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.6-2.0Ghz Brand: hp preferred, but any good deal is fine with me Screen: 14" or 15", the lighter the better Memory: no preference, but ddr2 so can expand hackintosh: LAN and audio should work OOB (wireless even better) other: i would want something aesthetically pleasing, such as NOT a thinkpad, but it is not a high priority. If you are wondering the usage of this laptop, it would be a student laptop, but battery life shouldn't be TOO much of an issue (although the longer the better) priority: 1. Price 2. Screen/Weight 3. Hackintosh status 4. Processor 5. Everything else thank you all of you! last comment: oh, and to everybody, before you suggest a macbook, i dont want it. The macbook is overpriced, and since equal or better specs can be found in sub-1000's, i would prefer to hackintosh. Plus, this is my first real try at osx86, since my desktop is as far as it could get from being hackinotsh-compatible (nvidia 9600gt, ecs intel g33 chipset, only the processor is compatible). so, yeah, i know the macbook is popular, but just can i have somthing else? thank you ~Cremestar Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/108614--/ Share on other sites
Synaesthesia
Actually the only incompatible component in your hackintosh is the 9600GT, the G33 chipset should actually work. This has been discussed lots, everyone still recommends a Macbook. It works perfectly, has great performance, battery life and has great resale value. It's lighter and thinner than most Laptops as well. I'm not just saying this as an Apple fan, Laptop-wise, it really is the best for OS X. Get a refurbished, 2nd hand or student discount (free iPod touch before September 15). But if you wanna settle for something else, get a Dell Vostro, or XPS M1330 or HP DV2500. I have to recommend this because it does the job for my wife and I. We both have ACER 5610Z and are happy with them fully. They both run Vista flawlessly, and costs under $600. Acer lappies catch a lot of flack for the power connector's solder breaking, and for the cheap and flimsy cases. But so far I have no complaints on either (both over a year old). So, I just recommend checking out some Acers to compare price, both new and litely used. I know you can get an Acer close to mine on eBay for around $400 USD, but new Acers run approx. $650 USD anyways. So yeah... I need to go to bed Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/108614--/#findComment-770488 Share on other sites
Synaesthesia
I have an Acer Laptop. It works perfectly in OS X, except for the network port and it only cost $400. I even posted a thread about it. There are tons of laptops that work well with OSX86, of course. Build quality is fine. But I'd still rather have a Macbook, I just couldn't afford one... cremestar
thank you everybody! can you give the model numbers, and are they core 2 duo...i want something like that so it would last me a while. edit: i just checked, i cant find the Acer 5610Z anymore...the regular acer 5610 is still availible, does that work? edit#2: does the hp dv6000t series work with integrated x3100? @Synaesthesia (the spelling is killiing me): 1. your hp dv2500t link is the same as the one about the dells, and the model has now been upgraded to dv2700t, does the new one work, and can i save money by using the default GMAx3100?... 2. oh, and as for my desktop, but even if the 9600 is incompatible, it would still display under default resolution right? or actually, can i just unplug the card and see if there is a GMA3100 patch? thanks Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/108614--/#findComment-771345 Share on other sites
Synaesthesia
Yeah, I think the X3100 will work in any laptop. There's a thread called "Leopard Laptops with non-working X3100." Check it out. Or just get a Macbook 2. oh, and as for my desktop, but even if the 9600 is incompatible, it would still display under default resolution right? or actually, can i just unplug the card and see if there is a GMA950 patch? thanksI don't know, but, yes, if you unplug it, the GMA 950 will work. Synaesthesia
Dude, there are too many brands and stuff to consider. Basically it will work if it's an Intel Laptop on an Intel Platform. Then you need to look at individual components, like Wireless cards and Audio chipsets, and those that are on the list, work. It's a real schlepp. I recommend the Dell Vostro, it's attractive, works well, there's a complete guide for it and it's totally customisable too. Macgirl's Guide for Dell laptops is just awesome. But you can get any brand. There are tons of threads on the same topic. Check this rough Google search and you see what I mean... The Dell XPS M1330 is arguably even better than the Macbook. cremestar
agh! can all of you just make productive reccomendations, NOT counting the macbook? yes, i know the macbook is best when running os x, but i will USUALLY be running vista. also, the macbook, nevermind the macbook pro, is out of my budget. sorry for being bad-tempered, but it does get annoying after a while (and also, i accidentally screwed my computer significantly when trying to install kalyway onto it last night)... @synthaesia - i tried installing kalyway leo 10.5.1 last night on my g33 - it couldn't even get to the apple screen, just loaded darwin and suddenly rebooted specs: -ecs g33t-m2 (if theres a hardware incompatibility list, that piece of junk is going there) -intel g33 northbridge, ich9 (i think) southbridge -realtek 8111b LAN -realtek alc883 audio -2gb ram -intel core 2 duo conroe e6550 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/108614--/#findComment-774912 Share on other sites
cremestar
hello?? bump anyways, i just read this thread (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=101350), and after seeing a VERY good deal at best buy for that (only $699USD), coupled with a not-too-bad price if i delay and miss the sale ($800USD), im probably going to d/l kalyway 10.5.2 and buy that laptop. if anyone used that before, PLEASE post here! also, if there are any more reccomendations, please post!!
